Magic & Pelinka appreciation thread

After taking on a cap locked, lottery-bound team with picks owed and no legitimate path to contention, in 2018-19 the Lakers are going to have

LeBron James on a max contract

Brandon Ingram
Lonzo Ball
Josh Hart
Kyle Kuzma
Svi Mykhailuk
Mo Wagner
Issac Bonga all on rookie deals

$38.2M in cap space to sign any max free agent
All future 1st round picks in hand.

There's still work to be done but its been quite a turnaround. Finally a front office we don't have to second guess.

I asked dock this on another thread, but seems somewhat relevant to your post so I'll ask again since dock is out vacillating somewhere.

so looks like we cleared 38.2 mil for next year, does that include renouncing ALL the one year deals we signed for the 2018-2019 season (Rondo, Magee, Stevenson, KCP, Beasly etc). next year are we just gonna have the kids, Lebron and another max and no room for ring chasing vets?

There's not much to renounce as we won't have bird rights on any of those guys anyways. We can still use the MLE to add to the team but otherwise its mostly going to be ring chasing vets, LeBron + another max superstar, our own draft picks and the kids.

After one year the team gets “non-bird” rights which allows for paying a player 120% of their previous salary, so technically yeah you still habe to renounce all of those cap holds prior to getting cap space.

Cool. That’s a big deal. I have a feeling this team will want to stick together as is after this season.

And, co-signing that it’s nice not to have to second guess the FO all the time. I always trusted Mitch but never under Chaz the bartender.

Grade A+ so far in my view. Thank you, Pelagic.

This is our cap space situation in 2019. Only way we can get 38m in cap space is via renouncing all of the 2nd rounders + Zubac + one of Hart/Kuzma or drafting a stash or trading the 2019 FRP.

Highly doubt KD will jump ship, so currently with all options picked up and Zubac back on his QO, the team has more than enough for Kawhi or Butler. After that the team only has like 3.5m in cap space left + its Room Exception. Gonna be hard to find 2 quality ring chasers with that, especially defensive big men who arent utterly useless on O.

An appreciation thread?

Did Jeanie fire them both?

Lebron, Kawhi (hypothetically), Ball, Ingram, Kuz, Hart, Zubac, Mid-Level, Ring-Chaser #1....We're 9 deep already. You can sign vet-min's...you have this years rookies. You will have next years rookies. We'll have our 14-15 players.

So glad Jeanie got the eggs to toss her brother to the curb. I'll never be 'happy' about Mitch, but it is clear the 2 of them were working in the world of yester-year. Let's just hope we get that 2nd max....and it's a guy of the A-Davis, Durant, Kawhi level.

Really looking forward to enjoying this season. To be over .500 again.....holy hell it feels like a decade ago since that happened.

Let’s sit back and enjoy the start of the season before we start worrying about next summer... If Minny, New Orleans, Portland or Toronto have a rough start, opportunities will present themself... I still want Klay Thompson (Cali boy with Laker lineage)... Fits perfectly at the 2 boys...

Lakeshow Baby...

I get nothing from that link...

We have just enough room to sign LT vet max guys like KD, 38 million. If not then we can go after Kawhi/Butler/Klay for 33 range leaving us with 5 million under cap and our exceptions for ring chasers plus our FRP based on playoff bound team status pick salary.

Magic/Pelinka aced their jobs in signing LeBron while keeping our rookie core contracts and flexibility to add a second Max guy plus ring chasers.

Can we really appreciate Jesse Buss and the scouting department? If Rob ever calls it quits, I would not worry about Jesse being the GM. He has a really good eye for talent.

As for Magic and Rob, they're doing one helluva job. They turned this down spiraling team around in 2 seasons. I can't wait for whats to come in the future!

As far as I'm concerned we have one of the best FOs in the league. All they've managed to do in their 1.5 seasons in charge is via trade: turn Lou Will, Clarkson (contract we didn't want), Nance, Mozgov (contract we REALLY didn't want), Dlo into 3 1st round picks, Lopez, IT, Corey Brewer, Frye and then we turned one of those 1st round picks into a slightly later pick and a 2nd round pick.

Getting 1st round picks isn't easy, to get 3 of them without giving up anything of that much significance (minus DLO who seemingly had locker room problems, not to mention the questions about his knee) while simultaneously dumping so much salary?

Meanwhile, in the draft they take Ball, Kuzma, Hart, Bryant, and this years picks. This year is TBD but signs are positive. Ball, maybe won't be the BPA, though he has a good deal of potential, but Kuzma and Hart with picks #27/30, and trading back in the draft to get Hart? 2 picks of that value that deep in the draft is impressive as Hell.

With FA signings, they avoid any bad long term contracts and bring in some reasonable talent, including KCP who was a pretty good get last year, and to top it off, sign THE BEST PLAYER IN THE LEAGUE.

So in summary, dump one of the worst contracts in the league and another contract we didn't want, made a tough call that I agree with in dumping DLO, acquire several 1st round picks and come up with 2 absolute end of the 1st round steals, avoid any bad contracts, and sign the best player in the league.

Our scouting team led by Jesse is outstanding. However, leading a scouting team and being a GM are totally different issues. I expect Jesse to do well in any role but lets just appreciate President Magic, GM Pelinka and Scouting Director jesse all separately and as a team. I hope they remain a Lakers for the next decade and more.

Gotta appreciate Jeanie as well for first getting rid of Jimmy and Mitch had to be an unfortunate casualty but still the right move. And then for hiring the man with the golden touch and then being wise enough to get him Pelinka to fill Magic's deficiencies. Can't say enough about Jesse and his contribution to this turn around. No way we sit this comfortably if our picks were busts.

So far they have made all the right moves. Well done Maginka and Jeannie.
