Does Lonzo have small hands?

Seriously though.. when Lonzo is on a break away he always tries to cup the ball in one hand for the dunk.. which has sometimes led to him mishandling the ball and/or almost missing the dunk...

Vice versa, whenever Zo attacks the rim in traffic, without fail he also either mishandles the ball or just blows the dunk/layup. Has anyone else ever notice this? it's so awkward when he attacks the rim... it's like he doubts himself when hes right at the rim and either fumbles the ball or throws it away.. I'd like to see him start attacking the rim and just dunk it like a normal player... off one leg and not cupping the ball.. he has the speed, athleticism, and height to attack the rim over smaller PGs. Curious if this is a product of small hands or it's mental (lack of confidence) or both? My money is on the latter

I always chalked up his apprehension once he’s in the paint to him being overly fragile / having a lack of physical strength.

If his hands are below average in size, I doubt it is by much, i.e. maybe a half inch in length, at most.

I think sometimes he tries to avoid using his off-hand to secure the ball, which may be a mistake. Lonzo is a finesse player who for the most part tries to avoid contact and finish around defenders.

Unless a guy has huge hands, they are going to cup it against their wrist on a one handed dunk. Kobe always had to cup it on 1 handed dunks.

Should Lonzo go stronger at times and just attempt a strong, two handed dunk? Yes.

But I have seen him finish nicely even in the last few games, at the rim, with layups and dunks.

I noticed this too. He has really "stiff" hands if you will. Maybe has he has weak hand strength?

If his hands aren't the issue.. then is it just mental as to why he is becomes apprehensive on his attacks in the last second? What triggered this post for me is that I even see this "apprehensiveness" when hes on a break away... it's awkward and sticks out like a sore thumb to me...

Agree with the "finesse" player.. it kind of fits his personna.. I think the knock on Zos "personna" is that he acts "too cool"... like nothing bothers him. He tries to do a cool one handed cup dunk.. it bites him though when it manifests in other ways.. like early in his rookie year when he walked away from a scrum/tussle and didnt get involved to back up his teammates. When asked about it later he said "this the NBA, no ones throwing a punch I'm just trying not to get suspended"... which isn't what you want to hear from your supposed starting pg that's supposed to be a leader. I think i read that KCP and other vets sat him down afterwards and told him he needs to back up his players. His "too cool" persona could be part of the issue. Ie he doesn't want to get out of his comfort zone which is why the midrange and attacks are so awkward?

Maybe. I've noticed the super "chill" personality thing but I think that's just who he is. He is the same way in interviews. He's super relaxed. I think that's okay.

I don't personally have a big problem with him not running into a fight. For the most part he is right that you're only going to get suspended for no reason. He's there to play basketball not fight.

At the end of the day it's about results. When he plays well he seems to effortless rack up a triple double. He picks his spots and makes a couple threes, gets a few easy dunk/layups, and drops 10 dimes. Also he's no slouch on defense...

I don't think he's acting "too cool" on purpose or that it's a flaw. I think he just knows that's how he feels comfortable and how he gets the best results. It's been working for him his whole life. It's just a question of if he can elevate his game to be a good/great NBA player.

I'm less concerned about this and more concerned about his ability to stay healthy. And also his general confidence level. I hope he doesn't let the airballs get to him and just keeps shooting and keeps being him. And if anything just gets more confident in himself and maybe then you'll see more aggression. I've seen flashes of aggression this year where he put his weight into someone inside and forced his way to the hoop.
