Woj: Luke doesn’t fit the mold of what Magic sees in a coach

”Since Magic has taken over, they had been hoping to get their own coach in at some point. We saw it play out in the meeting they had earlier in the year where Magic really went after Luke,” Wojnarowski said. “If they’re going to be able to go to Jeanie Buss and sell her on replacing Luke Walton, they better be trying to do it off a season where they missed the playoffs or off of a long losing streak. Because she has been fiercely loyal to Luke Walton.
“That was her hire in every way, and so far she has kept management off of him. They’ve allowed Magic and Rob Pelinka to change everything there, they haven’t been able to touch Luke Walton.”
”Magic’s view of a coach remains Pat Riley. The fiery, old-school (guy). That’s his view. Luke Walton doesn’t fit the mold of what he sees in a head coach.”

I was fine with it all until "old-school" was used

Magic wants Scott back... Book it.
Is it safe to assume Magic is leaking this to Woj?

Jeannie. So she can blame Magic when she moves on from Luke

Would be a horrible decision. We've been through old school coaches and they dont be long in today's NBA.

Why not? I don't like him but I think he has been doing a good job recently.

I do not support moving on from Walton at all. Where the hell is Woj getting all this Lakers noise from all of a sudden? Seems like another team is trying to throw smoke in Lakers land. I'm not buying any of it.

Walton by no means is a perfect coach. But hes better than what's out there.. I don't want a washed up coach going on his 4th team.
Luke was one of us and itll feel that much better winning one with him. . His rotations are a head scratcher but it's all about results, and hes done a good job thus far in a season where Maginka gave him Nance and Rondo as supporting cast.
I've said this here before, but my "Hot Take" / Tin Foil hat theory is that Magic hired Rambis to be a "Coach in waiting" should Luke falter... Magic cant help but get the band back together. And Rambis is as old school as it gets cut from the same Pat Riley cloth.. though a little watered down from learning under Phil... still.. I'd Prefer Luke over Rambis...
The irony in this, is if Magic is really trying to bring Showtime back then Luke Is the right coach for him.. he wants a free flowing, up tempo offense predicated on running off defensive stops. THAT IS showtime to the core.. I just dont think Magic likes Luke's laid back personality AND probably sees him as TOO young to coach a veteran championship team. Which may be true, but unless Pop, or Brad Steven's becomes available, I'd much rather roll with Luke over the other coaches currently out there..

By the WAY: if these rumors by WOJ were emphatically not true.. I would expect Magic and/or the organization to release a statement endorsing Luke..
Remember last year after the Lavar debacle.. Magic stayed quiet.. it was Carlisle (Prez of coach union) to first come to Luke's defense.. then Jeanie publicly stated her endorsement of Luke.. then FINALLY, Magic released his comments once Jeanie essentially forced him to do so ..
I'd like to see Magic refute woj and state his backing in Luke.. doubt itll happen tho

I am not sure any other coach can do better than where they are now in the West. Maybe when we get a second star and we faltered in the second round of the playoffs or even the West Finals, then we need a "Steve Kerr" hire, but even then I am confident that Luke Walton can navigate a talented team.
Asking for Byron Scott or Rambis is a Jimmy Buss move of old.

The legend of Luke is greater than the reality of Luke. Luke is the guy who's been using Ingram and Bron as the initiators of the offense and putting Ball off the ball all season. This has been happening to start and finish games all year and it's by design.
Tonight's game we saw Bron off the ball a lot and Ball with the ball a lot and it went pretty well. When Ingram comes back we'll see how "free flowing" it will be. If we go back to that double iso stuff I'd not be shocked if we see this ratcheted up.

If Lakers continue to play well....then Luke gets fired.... Folks I am done with the Lakers. When the team finally is showing signs of stability and winning.....why even disrupt it to soothe Magic's ego ?

He IS the coach with the worst winning percentage in NBA history. For real.
What’s our record? 18-11. Second seed in the super conference west. The team is gelling. LBJ is smiling.
WOJ is losing it, or Ballmer is in his pockets and West in his ears.
We’re 18-11. Luke should be fine.
