Not going to lie loved watching Shaq/Kobe win those titles beautiful basketball, but I realize the Lakers need a taste of losing for the balance of the league.Them and the Spurs dominated in the early 2000s. 76ers are on their way to title contention and because Lebron missed some time Lakers are going to miss the playoffs, so you might want to pay attention to the standings. I thought Lakers were going to make the playoffs. What gets me is when a organization like the Lakers starts to get their turn of losing their fans start panicking right away when they just get a few seasons of losing. TALK ABOUT ENTITLEMENT.

You sound like David Stern when he said that "for basketball reasons" crap. Lakers have a winning tradition so we are really not accustomed to losing. We are not like the Sixers that has been losing since like Iverson left. We don't treat losing here as a process.

It's boring if the same team wins all the time. Yea hate to break to ya but recently Lakers had a "process" too how else do they get Lonzo Ball and Brandon Ingram. Lonzo Ball being a botched pick, but I'll admit 76ers also botched on Fultz too lol. Then just got Lebron James to sign on a team he knew wasn't going to compete for a title. The worst free agent signing of his career.

Yeah, the Lakers are a boring winning team. I guess that makes the Sixers an exciting losing team.

Why didn't the Lakers try to get Jerry West back in charge?

Jerry asked to be involved supposedly, but Jim wasn't into it and then Jeanie chose Magic's full 1 voice president thing over Jerry.

Can the buss family just sell. We're not winning anything with these idiots as owners.

Poor Dr Buss, he gave his all for us, just to have his kids ruin it.

Jeannie Buss needs to drop the family business mantra and start hiring people who are competent. The Lakers can have the absolute cream of the crop. They can offer their management positions to the best minds in the business - and beyond the business. They can hire the most scrupulous, conscientious, and brilliant people in the world.

But she hired Earvin.

Historically yes, but not this year.

If the fairly obvious game-plan of signing LeBron, and pairing him with AD and maybe another star player, doesn't come true... Then the firing of Jim and Mitch, the hiring of Magic and Rob, and even the signing of LeBron to varying degrees, would have to go down as some of the most vapid, substance-less, pretty moves in organization history...

This Org has no idea how to hire coaches... But we've always be halfway decent hiring executives...

It's Macbeth, who is destroying the kingdom. A great soldier doesn't make a good king. And, "basketball players don't make good GM's," said Kobe Bryant.

Instead of assembling a sensible roster, Magic and Rob built a flawed one from the beginning, with mismatched agendas. They set unrealistic expectations based on their own inadequate work. And blamed others when it didn't work. And instead of developing our assets, Magic and Rob killed the value of ALL our young players. They did that carelessly, desperately, and ultimately, bottom line, they failed. They need to be held accountable for their bad risks - and bad faith.

And both Magic and Rob Pelinka have been unscrupulous as representatives of the Lakers. In their short time, they both have been individually fined or warned times for tampering, coming across to the rest of the league as arrogant pricks who think rules don't apply to them. That erodes trust - and the league is a club. It operates on good faith, which Magic and Rob have in their short time have disregarded. Wink-winks, back-channels, shady deals, conflict of interest - getting in bed with Lebron and Rich Paul, whom they've allowed to orchestrate moves that ultimately eroded the Lakers' standing and ability to operate in the league. Within their short tenure, at least several teams including the Pacers and New Orleans have stonewalled Magic and Rob and refused to deal with them.

Magic and Rob have lost credibility in the league. As a result, so have the Lakers. They've become handicapped as a result of Magic and Rob's own behavior and actions. The Lakers have become a laughingstock, because they've build so much resentment around the league that teams, not just fans, but actual teams are scheming of ways to gain their revenge for Magic, Rob, Lebron, Rich Paul's arrogance and unscrupulous behavior. And they've ruined their own product. The team is a mess. They're divided, against the coach, against each other. Toxic.

Magic is a basketball player. Rob is an agent. Neither of them has shown qualifications in running a basketball team, let alone elevating it or bringing back showtime. They screwed up. They can't undo this. They'll try, but they can't. Too many bridges burnt, reputations set. The Lakers used to be a class act. Now, the class clown.

Jeannie needs to clean house. She did once for incompetence. Now, that and debasement. Purple and gold can sadly join the red, white, and blue as glory bled dim by corrupt leadership.

perfectly stated!!! meanwhile, across the street, the mature knowledgeable ones sit quietly not making a sound.

yet this was inevitable. you KNEW all was about to change when lal signed lebron, so i think the lakers en toto were headed down this road like a runaway 5mph train - just this thing that could not be stopped.

jeannie won't clean up the mess though. you know that. magic is closer to the family than the other siblings. maybe cutting off pelinka? maybe?? wtf is he anyway!

the lakers need another voice, and to lay down the law with lebron. they have bron by the gonads,,,by contract, and that he wants to be part of the hollywood a-list

Lakers left with one big question: Does Magic Johnson know what he's doing? Image

It wasn’t supposed to be like this.

Lakers owner Jeanie Buss and the rest of Lakers Nation believed bringing back Earvin "Magic" Johnson as president of basketball operations was the beginning of an era of sustained success. How could it not be? Everyone loves Magic. He’s the most celebrated player in franchise history, and he’s the face of the Los Angeles sports scene with his Lakers and Dodgers presence.

POWER RANKINGS: Lakers keep tumbling down

But so far, it’s been anything but "Showtime" at Staples Center. The sheer number of missteps, odd roster moves and free agent/trade whiffs have raised a serious question. Is it possible Johnson and the Lakers don’t know what they’re doing?

Let’s take a look at some of the questionable moves Magic has made in his short tenure in LA.

It's what we've been saying here... So it's not new, but I post it, because it's nice to see Magic get some of the heat he's been trying to shine on Luke and the young guys...

I’m glad Magic is getting the heat he deserves, but at the same time I also think this all but guarantees we sign one of the “second” tier max guys this offseason, because it seems like we’re going to whiff on the big 4: Klay, KD, Kawhi, and Kyrie. There’s no way Magic will be able to take the heat of having a quiet offseason. That means one of Butler, Cousins, or Kemba at the max. I would have mixed feelings about maxing one of those guys.

West kind of threw a hissy-fit, took his toys and went home, with Dr Buss when he left the Lakers the first time... He's said several times he'd like to come back but it's never happened so far...
Which makes me think maybe it's been all talk... Maybe he's just saying it to mess with public perception of the Lakers...

The main issue was that he did not want to hire Phil and hand over Personnel control to him... He acted like a pouty child about it and quit...

So it would make sense that Jeannie might not be all that interested in bringing him back....

Phil Jackson was an absolute no-brainer... He was already a legend, still in his prime, with his entire staff still going strong... West didn't like it, but there was very little risk there other than the boat loads of money he wanted...

Outside of Phil though, and going back until at least the 70's... We suck at coaching hires... Phil and Riley and that's it... And both of those guys were on the verge of getting let go many times...

Riley was the part of the broadcast team before he got a coaching gig if memory serves.....

..... and yes, we have sucked at finding coaches. One part of that is having coaches who've had such great success I'd think. When we are looking we suck and good/great coaches are chasing teams with a chance.... when we get a good team we seem to find someone.

If I was Jerry West I wouldn't want to hand over personnel control to someone else. If this is what happened, then the split was basically a necessary or foregone conclusion one way or the other.
