Rajon Rondo since he came back from injury

Rajon Rondo on court since he came back:

-1
+13 (against the Suns)
-11
-6 (Lakers win against LAC by 3)
-15
-32
-9 (game winner against Boston but Lakers terrible with him on court)
-14
-2
-9 (Lakers defeat Houston by 5)
-11 today

He’s been a horrific defender and not good offensively. Here’s his defense contesting shots. Opponents are shooting a whopping 5.4% better against him than against other opponents. Lakers are 4.4 points per 100 possessions WORSE on defense with him on court than off.

Caruso would do just as well at this point. If Ball were healthy, he should get 36 minutes a game+ staggered with James and Rondo shouldn’t see minutes,

I didn’t like the signing when Magic made it, and Rondo has been every bit as mediocre as I expected. Luke is going to take the fall for this disappointing season and that’s fine, but the story of this year for me is Magic’s crappy offseason moves coming back to bite this team. It terrifies me that he’s going to be allowed to make the next coaching hire.

I wonder if it's more to do with him being annoyed by being in trade talks or being taken to the bench when there is no PG in the starters

He’s been basically an negative on court and his team worse with him on court every season after 2012.

Since 2012, he’s played 12,000 minutes and his team has been -2.8 points per 100 possessions with him on court and 3.3 points per 100 WORSE with him on than off. All the people who looked at advanced stats and said Stephenson and Rondo and Beasley were **** signings were dead on.

What's the record of those teams? Over a season on a losing team a lot of guys will have negative numbers.

Our bench has been horrid and he's had to play with them for the most part. The issue with using ± as a predictor is that it's not predicated on individual performance. He could be making great passes to guys who can't hit the broad side of a barn.... which I've seen recently.

Overall, I think putting him, or Ball for that matter, in a line up with Bron and Ingram isn't going to be great for either of them. Ingram's game is dependent on pounding the ball... Bron likes the ball too. That leaves no-shoot PG's like them doing what they are not great at by default.

This team is not balanced nor is it ready to be a contender. It's a work in progress. I have no issue with what Rondo has brought this year. Recently he's had troubles for sure but he also has had stretches where he did make a difference.

Lonzo is out and he still isn't starting. Pretty obvious he is unhappy and uninspired. Not too sure he cares much for playing along LeBron either. Neither of these two vets play any defense consistently.

Just off the top of my head, he’s been on playoff teams in the Mavs (when he was initially traded out of Boston), the Bulls with Wade and Butler, and last year the Pelicans.

Rondo’s negative numbers have nothing to do with the team’s he’s been on. He puts up negative numbers because he’s not all that good anymore.

Lebron has the 2nd best DRPM on the team at 1.84 despite missing 18 games. Only Chandler is better. Kuzma is 85th of 94 power forwards. Ingram is 63rd of 88 small forwards. McGee is 44th of 65 centers. Lebron is not the reason for the defensive struggles.

Rondo was brought here to be vet leader and brain for Lonzo to pick... I think they promised him a longer term role after this season, but when his and Lonzo's name came up in the trade, the realized it probably wasn't going to happen and tuned out...

I think if he's signing one and done contracts, he's got the right to choose where at this stage in his career...

I think he might have also assumed LeBron would be playing off ball more... Which is what they implied to start the season... But that also hasn't happened.

Since the trade deadline, Lance and Rondo have been pretty bad... And I think we were counting on those guys to be spark plugs for us, when the youngsters hit the wall.

Yup, I wouldnt be surprised if LeBron went to Walton and demanded he be the Point Forward from here on out which essentially eliminated any opportunity for Rondo to get big minutes. He doesnt seem too fond of LeBron and all this catering to him when they aren't winning on top of it.

What a nightmare.

Let's not forget that Ingram has taken the place of the PG in the offense and not just pile on LeBron here. I know it makes everyone feel good coming off the trade deadline but Luke has decided he wants either Bron or Ingram to initiate the offense.

I'd say the results are mixed at best. Ingram is not as good at it as Bron, Ball or Rondo but he keeps getting trotted out there and given every opportunity to do it. To what end? Is Luke thinking that he's going to do this long term here? If so then Rondo may stick to be a back up but Ball would have no future here. The line ups are constantly changing and making less and less sense if our core is going to be our core.

No, almost always only bad players will. Lakers aren’t a losing team with LeBron playing and are around .500 overall. This isn’t like the Suns or Bulls or whatever. Every year since 2012 (except for NO last year when they were the same with Rondo on court or off) he has been a negative on court AND HIS TEAM HAS BEEN WORSE WITH HIM on court than off. Every season since 2012. Thousands of minutes of data.

Opponts are shooting 5.4% BETTER against him than they do against all other opponents.

https://stats.nba.com/player/200765/defense-dash/

Too bad Ball is hurt when he started getting going. That Ball before injury combined with dialed in LeBron would have been something.

But Luke can minimize the damage by AT LEAST not playing Bron and Rondo together. Rondo + LeBron are -4.4 points per 100 possessions. That’s lotto team bad. It doesn’t work. Rondo is terrible defensively, isn’t being defended outsid arc, closes spacing, and does not make up for it with his playmaking.

Rondo is the only player James doesn’t have a positive on court impact with. I think James was over +15 per 100 possessions with Zubac before he was traded. Yet Luke still plays them together.

T. Chandler | L. James, +6.4
J. Hart | L. James, +5.0
L. James | L. Stephenson, +3.4
L. James | K. Kuzma, +3.2
K. Caldwell-Pope | L. James, +2.9
L. Ball | L. James,+2.5
R. Bullock | L. James, +1.9
L. James | J. McGee, +1.4
B. Ingram | L. James, +1.3
L. James | R. Rondo, -4.4

Some things never change.
I said that before the season that Rondo + Lebron cant play together. It was obvious from the way they signed Rajon

I thought Rondo played pretty well last night... Some of the stuff he does, aren't always flashy, but when we needed key buckets, he delivered, and when we needed assists, he got people the ball in positions to score...

Maybe not his best game this season, but pretty good nonetheless...
