Our toughest Playoff Match-up

Post#1 » by jkokkotos » Mon Aug 19, 2019 6:50 pm

Really interested to see where everyone's head is on this matter. Focus on how do we match-up against each team offensively & defensively. For example, some teams do not have a solid defensive stopper for LeBron's position or for AD's position (or even both in one case, imo), but defensively the Lakers might not have a great answer for that said team's top 2 scorers either. So, if you account for our match-up projection on both ends of the floor against each team, it can be a good/bad match-up or closer to a wash overall if neither team can guard each other (or the other extreme, both teams can guard each other so well that it results in another tie).

Some Playoff depth chart projections (9-man rotations instead of shorter like 7-man, because I cannot predict if 1 guy has a rotation role in one series but is thrown out of rotation in the next series because match-ups dictate his coach to give his minutes to another guy):

Lakers:
Guards: Green, KCP, Bradley, Caruso
Wings: LeBron, Kuzma, Dudley
Bigs: Davis, McGee

Warriors:
Guards: Curry, D'Lo, Burks
Wings: (Klay), Robinson III, McKinnie
Bigs: Draymond, Cauley-Stein, Looney

Clippers:
Guards: Beverley, Lou, Shamet
Wings: Kawhi, George, Harkless
Bigs: Zubac, Harrell, Green

Rockets:
Guards: Harden, Westbrook, Rivers
Wings: Gordon, Tucker, Green
Bigs: Capela, Chandler, Bennett

Nuggets:
Guards: Murray, Harris, Morris
Wings: Barton, Grant, Beasley
Bigs: Jokic, Millsap, Plumlee

Jazz:
Guards: Mitchell, Conley, Mudiay
Wings: Bogdanovic, Ingles, Green, O'Neale
Bigs: Gobert, Davis

Blazers:
Guards: Lillard, McCollum, Little
Wings: Bazemore, Hood, Hezonja
Bigs: (Nurkic), Whiteside, Collins

My guess is Houston would be our toughest matchup in a playoffs series.

We have no answer for Westbrook and Harden while I think Tucker and Capela can bother AD a bit. I'm not even sure if we have an answer for Gordon either. I am hopeful Bradley can regain some of his defensive toughness.

2nd toughest matchup is likely the Clippers. They have defenders that should be able to slow down Lebron. They have no answer for AD. Lou is always a tough matchup. Doc is also capable of coming up with schemes that could make life very difficult for our star players.

I think we matchup best with Denver.

It’ll be easier to say once we have our DMC replacement.
NBA titles since the merger: LAL 11, CHI 6, SAS 5, BOS 5, GSW 4.

At this moment, we are really thin at bigs ang McGee is the only legit C and can only play in limited minutes that's why I think Nuggets is the toughest match-up. Jokic is probably the best big that we could face and we have no one to stop him at this point while Murray is better than any of our guards.

I'll come back to this thread when we make the playoffs :)

But if I had to pick 1 and only 1 ... I'd say Houston

We ain't got no one who can stop Harden/Westrbrook and I mean no one
Bring back Defense

In theory, it'll probably be the Clippers... But we won't know until we see all the teams play.

Denver could be a real PITA too...

The Warriors are seriously being underrated. Championship experience. Steph/Green/Klay/3Angelo...

I voted Utah Jazz.
Surprised that Clippers are leading the vote.

I'm starting to see the Lakers as potentially the toughest match up for the Clippers, if anything.

A Davis, Dwight, McGee, LeBron, D Green, Kuzma -- that length.
