Sources: Los Angeles Lakers begin contract extension talks with Dennis Schroder

Post#1 » by iamworthy » Sat Dec 26, 2020 3:26 pm

Before the start of the season, Schroder turned down an initial Lakers offer to extend his contract for an additional two years and $33.4 million, sources said -- an overture that represented the maximum allowable offer the Lakers could make to him prior to Feb. 16.

Schroder, who entered the final year of a $15.5 million contract, becomes eligible to extend that deal for more money and more years -- as much as $83 million over four years -- between Feb. 16 through the start of the 2021 offseason.

The Lakers can offer a starting salary of $18.6 million starting with the 2021-22 season, which creates much more of a realistic opportunity for the Lakers, Schroder and his agent, Alex Saratsis, to find a landing spot on a market-value extension with the Lakers.

Well, Kuzma and KCP are getting 13 per.

He should ask at least 18 per. What he'll actually get I don't know, but 18 is fair.

Somewhere between 18-20 million seems right, considering what the market currently is for guys with that skillset and the numbers he puts up. Don't know how that would affect our flexibility towards the future, but he's certainly an asset at 27 years old that you wouldn't want to let go for nothing. I'd rather see how he does in the playoffs before giving him an extension though.

At this point I trust that Rob will get us a good deal.

Would you consider $55M for three years being equal to ‘giving him his money’? Like, $17M, $18M, $19M over the next three years... ?

That’s ballpark what I’d like to offer him.

I’d be okay with paying him $55-60M over three years. Not much more, though. Year four is team option if requested by Schroeder’s agent.

I'm a Schroder fan, and I wanted to get him a year ago... But primarily as a 3 and D role player... I didn't and don't really see him as part of our core... In that regard, I think the biggest thing he has going for him is being close to the same age as AD and on the same career path... So I'm a little leery of locking him up long term on big money. Big money to me is $20M per...

That said, I'm not in the locker room or in practice... If Schroder is fully engaged and committed to getting better each season, and really wants to be here long term, then by all means, we should lock him up.

He's got a lot of hype right now, and is super confident which is good, but he also still has a lot of holes in his game... So for me, whether or not he's worth more than the around $15m/year they were offering him, really comes down to mind-set and chemistry...
I trust LeBron and Klutch is communicating well with the FO and has that on lock... So if they offer Schroder the around $20M/yr I think he'll get on the open market, I guess I'm cool with that.

20M for Schroder easily and Lakers should sign without hesitation. He’s a smooth operator out there on floor and is a perfect fit.

At age 27 his best years are now.

Rondo did better on Lillard, if you ask me, RD59. Still don’t get why we ‘let him walk’.

If chemistry seems good, I’d offer Schroeder:
A) 3 years for $52.5M (17.5x3), third year TO
B) 4 years for $64M (16x4), fourth year TO

I love his skills and from that perspective its a no brainer to keep him around. However.....Just as a human his body language really troubles me. He is always looking at the floor, never smiles, does not seem socially connected to his team mates....IDK he just seems i guess just that...not connected! Perhaps he needs time to get adjusted to new team mates, perhaps he needs that contract lol..IDK i like him but im..."SPICIOUS" lol

Chemistry indeed makes me wonder.

And defense. His perimeter defense today reminded me of Smush Parker and T-Air Brown.

Rondo did not play Lillard in the playoffs this year. He did better years and years ago when he had AD and Jrue with him and film to study because he knew he was playing him for 2 weeks sure. There is also the fact Lillard is horrid shooter in the playoffs for his career to work with, every single year, horrrible

HE is not going to smile or laugh. He is mercurial like Rondo personality wise and that works in some places. Dennis defensive numbers and offensive number blew regular season Rondo away for the two years we had him. Now playoff Rondo is playoff Rondo but we also had 2 years of in season Rondo who had horrid offensive and defensive numbers for months

My point is not that Rondo is better.

My point is that for his price tag, Schröder should outperform Rondo’s defense. Yes, playoffs Rondo.

The price and age production comparison says that otherwise paying 20M per for Schröder isn’t justified.

So far, I’m underwhelmed by Schröder’s perimeter defense. Rondo is just one example of one defensive veteran we could’ve signed for less who delivers more defense.

Don’t mistake activity for achievement. Schröder so far is funneling everyone to the big man, Smush style.

Update:

As of yesterday Dennis is eligible to sign an extension. I'm guessing he'll be offered 4/80

4/80 seems fair

Dennis works hard and has been effective even with his 3-shot not falling.

He definately has some head scratcher moments but he also has really good moments. There's also value in that he's able to play with LeBron or LeBron can play with him. LeBron played a few games with Isaiah in Cleveland and was like hell no. But what kind of trade did you have in mind?
