Rebuilding The Lakers From The Era of Mitch Kupchack to Majic & Rob Pelinka

Kupchack did a good job for a long time but became complacent and the team suffered with bad contracts and players. Majic & Rob Pelinka did an exceptional job drafting very good players from Jordan Clarkson to Josh Hart. All of these players are still playing and contributing. The Lakers should continue to draft good young talent and free agents. The correct blend of young and stars can be a tough act to follow in the NBA 2021. Rob Pelinka has been hard at work understanding the league and developing talent in the G league. Some one else to keep on the radar for the 2021-2022 season is Hassan Whiteside; he would be an excellent talent to add in the future.

Mitch didn’t do a good job at all to start or finish, let’s not revise history.

The Kobe and Shaq team were destroyed by Mitch long before they beefed. You have a team that goes 15-1 in the playoffs and you do this.

Let Horace walk because he wants 2mil and let Lue walk for 2 mill, while watching Harper retire. He went out and got Richmond, Hunter, and Walker all for the vet min with the league covering they salary. Then he waived Shaw because he didn’t want to honor the deal they signed him too before, so he hoped he cleared waivers and have him a minimum deal. We got almost beat by the kings because no one could defend Webber without Horace so we used Horry to death and Shaq really had no backup as he could sit the year before with Horace sliding down, Fish had no backup without Lue, and Mitch was unplayable so Shaw had to buy minutes for Kobe and Fish both.

The summer after the 3 peat the dummy renounced George and then signed him with our MLE. That very same summer Chauncey Billups was a free agent looking for the MLE. And what topped it off was he gave George max years he could offer. So we still were Uber thin everywhere and ran Fox and Horry in the ground because Shaq healed on company time. And he did bad in the draft too. We got beat by the Spurs, almost lucked out had Horry hit the 3, but still.

We get Malone and Payton not because of Mitch but because of Shaq like they said in their presser. We refused to pay Horry 2 mil to backup Malone, but we sign Bryon Russell yay to warm the bench. We know the story of what happened versus Detroit and how much Horry changes that sheed matchup.

We go into the next summer and they refuse to pay Fisher mle type money despite giving it to George. They trade Payton and Fox without a phone call so they refuse to show to Boston from the disrespect and the trade gets altered. Slave Medvedenko is given a new deal. The same money fish asked for yearly is given to the corpse of Vlade Divac who barely plays. We get chucky Atkins and Tierre Brown to replace Fisher and Payton.

The Lakers team brings Phil back. They decide to cheap out and make Smush starting pg. McKie is signed to the mle this time for two years again making what Fish wanted and never contributing **** to the team. Profit is signed to back up Kobe. Bynum is drafted. Caron for Kwame without telling Caron or Kobe. And Phil and Kobe over achieved like **** with that group to have a winning record.

Next summer comes and what do they do? Oh yeah they sign Shammond Williams with their BAE from overseas and then they sign Radmanovic at midnight with Mitch offering all the years and money to him he could with the mle. Cook gets an extension for 11mil. George isn’t actually replaced as there is no other wing on the team besides Kobe, unless if you want to call the downgrade of Mo Evans serviceable despite knowing Kobe had knee surgery that summer.

Kobe goes on a tirade and Jerry Buss came down and talked him off the ledge Mitch and Jim out him on. Fisher is signed back for the money he asked for years ago and a knee surgery later. The team takes off from the jump and camp. Luke got given a crazy deal by Mitch where he bid against himself. Ariza deal happens to to get rid of the Mo and Cook mess. Mitch gets called by every account and offered Pau as he was just trying to get Mike Miller, and by his own admission would not have traded for Pau had Bynum not been hurt. They take off and make the finals.

The Lakers return after a Boston loss and have a way of dominance to the 09 title. Really and truly he got rid of Vlad for Adam Morrison and Shannon was the throw in. He replaced Turiaf and Mihm with DJ and Powell too.

They sign Artest to replace Ariza which worked out. They go back to back. The thing is Odom and Fisher both have their deals come up and Mitch can’t close either so Jerry Buss goes and negotiates their deals himself to bring them back the next year. Blake and Barnes are brought in to replace Farmar and Blake never panned out with the weirdest string of injuries ever as a laker like stepping on spike strips in parking lots and getting a fracture only pitchers get. But he doubles down on stupidity by giving every member of Phil’s staff their walking papers in the second round before game 1 versus Dallas saying they won’t be back like an idiot and wondering why they fell apart everywhere at the seams.

The CP3 debacle happens and Odom goes mental because again Mitch being the disrespectful passive aggressive slime he is doesn’t even give him a heads up he gets traded and leaves it to the radio to tell him, same for Pau after all they did. The team does okay despite the bad coaching choice to replace Phil. Then he repeats the process of trading Fisher at the deadline without telling him at all after 5 rings and plenty years. Pau never is connected to the team again really and Bynum says there are banks in every city because of the way business is handled in the organization.

We know the Nash and Dwight debacle. We know Pringles over Phil which was all time stupid. He even amnestied Artest after saying he would not and never told him. We also know every failure after that all the way up to Deng and Mozgov and him being fired.

Mitch was not a good GM. Every deal that needed to be closed Jerry Buss came down and closed. When his star was pissed and called him out Jerry Buss came down and fixed it. Every player that was traded here was blindsided and disrespected and that included champions who voiced that about him. He always bid versus himself on mle type deals and that bit him. He gave Kobe and Shaq no help. He got three wrong coaches for Kobe and Pau. He couldn’t attract a star. In fact the meetings he took with Carmelo and Alrdridge both called him out for not knowing basketball, having no plan to present, and said the Lakers only solid presentation was marketing by Jeanie lol. He got his ass fired and went to Charlotte where the team has been awful, he overpays guys, drafts bad, and has been a coaching door ...

Mitch was no Pelinka ... Hell Mitch damn sure was no West .. Mitch was just lucky to have a job just like Jim Buss because Jerry Buss felt sorry for him and knew he could walk in and fix whatever they broke

Don't agree with that take very much. Mitch is prob a bit overrated, but you don't 'idiot' your way to 5 chips. Sorry. And if your gonna go with the "Jerry made all the good decisions" route....then you gotta throw in the bad decisions too.

But whatever.

The league changed....and Mitch was now an 'old mind'. I don't know exactly what the deal with Jim was....but clearly they were unable to bring in stars, and their tenure at the helm was a disaster. The good news is that that is now long past. We are paying $5mil a season for one more year to Deng......and then I don't think there is a single remaining shred of their time. 1 more year.

Same with the Magic / Pelinka era. They got some decent young pieces.....although I have yet to see any one of those guys turn into anything resembling a 'beast'. "Pretty decent player" "Starting to turn into something".....those are phrases you typically hear. Far from what you'd hear about Kobe or KD or something after year 4.

Getting Lebron was the key. And then trading the farm to get AD was what took it over the top. This is what we'll be for a few years, and it's going to be a game of signing what you can to compliment them. With quite a small budget. It's a very different mindset that what Magic/Rob took over 5 or so years back.

And that's pretty much it, IMO. We're gonna ride Lebron for a couple more years, and then try to pair someone else to go with AD. We have our cornerstone for another 7-8 maybe even 10 years. Everyone from Mitch/Jim era are gone, and really all the youth is gone. We have our core, and we're just gonna churn through mid-levels and minimums for a while.

Jerry West brought in Kobe, Shaq, Fisher, Fox, Horry, Shaw, and drafted George ... that was the 3 peat core ... If we are being technical he also brought in Lue and had Rice and Phil there too

Mitch resume really starts with the Horace for Rice move which Phil wanted. Literally his drafts were Luke, Rush, Cook, Bynum, Farmar, Sasha, Turiaf, Yue, Clarkson, Randle, and DAngelo. His signings were George, Cook, Radmanovic, Sasha, Blake, Barnes, Deng, Mozgov. His trades were Dwight, Nash, Kwame, Odom, Pau, Hibbert, Lin, Hill, Ariza, and Sessions. Coaches are Rudy T, Dantoni, Mike Brown, and Byron Scott

Metta signed his deal over a dinner with Jerry Buss, actually announced his decision to come to la over a dinner with Odom. Fisher and Odom had Buss come to them and work out their deals after Mitch dropped the ball and they went to other teams to talk. Phil also directly negotiated with Buss to return and his extensions as said in his book.

Malone and Payton admitted to getting called by Shaq and then getting talked to by Jerry and Magic with magic offering Malone his number 32.

He got free agent meetings with Aldridge and it went so bad the press covered that Aldridge and his agent said Mitch and Jim didn’t know how to talk about basketball and had no plan or idea for the team. They even asked him for a second meeting to try and make up for it and it went bad before he signed with the Spurs. He met with LA before the Spurs and came off saying they don’t know basketball. Carmelo and his wife took a meeting with the Lakers and said they were impressed by everything that Jeanie presented them about being a laker and the things that they both could accomplish but Carmelos criticism was that they had no answer when he asked who is coming to play with me, are you bringing Pau back, what’s your coaching going to be, and he got no answers.

His lack of basketball being coupled with Odom, Fisher, Pau, Payton, Artest all complaining of how he handled their exit is why he was not taken serious. He dealt them and never let them know after titles and years of service so he was seen as a snake. It’s telling that Jeanie says when she asked Kobe what to do with Mitch, he replied fire him and Jim both

We are now seeing Mitch without Jim. In that time he’s lost Kemba. He’s overpaid and gave bad deals out like Rozier, Zeller, and Hayward. He hasn’t made the playoffs. He’s went through a lot of coaches. And he is bottom of the league in attendance. Basically every criticism that

With all due respect, you forgot to mention the balls that it took for Jeannie to fire her brother. I think that was the catalyst that made the rest of the pieces to fall into place.

Most cut throat thing she ever did.

It needed to be done. Where did she get that advice? Kobe! Like she said he told her she needed to fire both of the Lakers were to turn around and be taken seriously as a team and front office.
