Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing, Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before;

Best signing on paper thus far I think. A young guy with an upside that tries on defense and a 40% 3p shooter. This is definitely the Caruso replacement. Not as good defensively but the better shooter

Re: Malik Monk to the Lakers WOJ
We did well with this. Man! What a signing this guy is , only 23 and will be playing with HOF level players. He will be on point. This takes away the Caruso punch to the gut. Welcome to LA Monk!

I'd be very reluctant to call him a 40% 3p shooter. Schröder shot 39% on 5 attempts from 3s the season before we traded for him. Similar to Schröder, Monk has several mediocre to poor shooting years and 1 great season in which he shot 40% from 3s. Nonetheless I still love the signing.

Sure, but doing it at the age of 22 is quite significant compared to 26. He's still improving and finding his way in the NBA whilst already reaching that benchmark. Schröder shot 38.5% and those shots were different than Monk. You can almost guarantee his shooting percentage will be better than Shröder. he also had an eFG% of 54% compared to Schröders' 48%. Obviously Schröder was a better defender but I think Monk is way more complementary on our roster than Schröder. Let's hopefully see the sign and trade go through because we have our guard rotation now with Westbrook/Monk/THT

Based on recent signings, I can only assume Pelinka thought he was signing Thelonious....

Westbrook - Nunn
Monk - Ellington - Bazemore
Davis - Gasol - Howard
Ariza - Anthony
James - Tucker
Monk is a solid signing for a team like this with multiple tall facilitators.

Don't know much about Monk after he left UK. He was a microwave scorer in college just on the small side. How has he been in the league

Don't know too much about him.
But I guess if we're gonna lose a Pope, bringing in a Monk and a Nunn is a good idea for the welfare of this team.

So how worried should we be in regards to his prior drug suspension? I knew nothing about this. Is that why they let him walk?

Might as well hire a Cardinal(Brian) along with God(Shammgod) of course to the coaching staff.
But to really make it work they need to trade for Rudy Gay and Kevin Love at some point of the season.

Hornets fan here. Mitch Kupchak called him the most talented player on the Hornets' roster. He is amazingly fast, can spot up, find an open shooter, or cut to the basket. He is very exciting to watch, with immense leaping ability. Monk had the misfortune of playing for the first two years under Steve Clifford, an old-school coach who nailed him to the bench. Last season, Monk had Covid-19 in preseason, then sat on the bench for nearly all the first seventeen games--even though the one game he played over 20 minutes, he did well, going 3 for 5 from deep, with 3 assists and 3 rebounds. Eventually, James Borrego realized the team was winning when he played: he had the second-best +- on the team, behind Devonte' Graham (also gone).
I would not call Monk a "microwave" shooter, as he often needs 8-10 minutes to get his rhythm. He can get very hot, sometimes from the moment he sets foot on the court. His defensive intensity is lacking on occasion, but he has definitely improved in that department over four years. According to the NBA site, his defensive rating last season was 108.6, third on the team for players who appeared in 20 games or more.
Fan opinion of Monk is violently divided. With a new team, he has a chance to really shine, unless Coach Vogel buries him on the depth chart, as Coach Borrego did.

If Vogel can improve this guy's defense, I think he's 100 times better than KCP. I'm excited that he's super young too. Rob Pelinka is such a boss.

I'm looking at monk to start. Imo he's got all the tools. Its just that here in Lakerland we've seen the potential guys come and go. But I'm banking on his potential to be fully realized here in LA. I guess we shall all wait and see.

Re: Malik Monk to the Lakers WOJ
Monk is better overall than Ellington and Bazemore, and he's a much better shooter than Tucker.
Monk would make a really good sixth man, but with Nunn, Tucker, and Anthony coming off the bench, the team doesn't need his offensive firepower there.
They need his shooting and explosiveness in the starting lineup, so, yeah, he should start.

Really looking forward to small-ball lineups with Westbrook and Monk sprinting down the floor.

I recognize this thought; not to isolate this just to Monk.
Many teams switch in players off the bench.
Thinking about this, I would be encouraged top see Vogel address this.
When we need those shots immediately to change momentum in games,
being ready when called should be a player's incentive.
Looking forward to seeing Monk's game, as well as all of our new additions.
