No lies detected really as they were shedding the salary of Odom in every part of the deal. If they had a version where they kept Odom and paid the tax to other teams, they probably do get it done. Mitch tried to push that through like a few days after the new Cba and revenue sharing plan which made everyone look bad.
They would essentially have had Fisher at SG and Artest at PF, cap space, a trade exemption and Dwight/CP with Kobe ... they would win more rings and not pay o it as much to everyone

I found fascinating the part where Gil said that the Orlando GM was the one that got the ball rolling to nix the trade by calling Cuban and explaining to him that if the trade stands the Lakers will trade Bynum for Dwight Howard and still have a ton of cap money to spend. That was new to me.

Still angers me everytime I watch Chris Paul, knowing that Kobe would have got his 6th ring and had a much better "ending" to his career. I thought about that a lot too after he passed.

Does not really shock me. It’s the same gm and front office that got Dwight on a plane without his agent and got him to agree to sign his opt in after saying he wanted out. They were shady as hell. They also helped keep quiet that Rashard Lewis had failed a steroid drug test while in the playoffs the year they went to the finals and it only came out after the finals was over.

Amazing that it still angers me a decade + later.
Gotta be one hell of a sore subject for Jim Buss. The Jim Buss era woulda looked alot different had that trade not been nixed. I'm one of the most vocal "anti-Jim" fans out there....but I gotta always give that little * when I talk smack. He prob woulda created one hell of a dynasty right there. Instead the whole thing falls apart, and Nash ends up being totally worthless (and costing 3 first rounders!!), and poor Lamar went off the deep end.
Massive wrench in his stint as PoBO.
Interesting perspective......not sure why the Orlando guy called Cuban. Is Cuban the league's hall monitor for any Lakers activities? I know he's kind of obsessed with us. Wouldn't be a surprise. Instead of bitching to Cuban....why didn't the Orlando owner grow a pair, and insist Dwight would go elsewhere??? He ended up trading Dwight for Bynum after all!

Orlando. What a joke. People tout Lebron as making the giant shift where organizations must empower players. THE LAKERS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN ABOUT PLAYER EMPOWERMENT. Weve always believed that its the Star players that bring in the Championships, and we have always catered to them.
This is why Orlando failed and got butt hurt. We offered Shaq unprecedented respect and dollars. Orlando didn't think Shaq was worth it, flinched and initially didn't want to pay. The Orlando fans and community didn't think Shaq was worth it, and the Magic supported that growing opinion, after failing in the finals.
Jerry Buss and Jerry West didn't hesitate. We got Shaq. We catered to the player. We won Championships. And they're still sore in the a** about that.
