The Los Angeles Lakers have signed Jay Huff to a two-way contract, it was announced today.

Huff appeared in 25 games (all starts) for Virginia last season, averaging 13.0 points (.585 FG%, .387 3P%), 7.1 rebounds, 1.0 assist and 2.6 blocks in 27.0 minutes per game. The 2020-21 ACC All-Defensive First Team selection led the conference in field goal percentage (.585) and scored in double figures 18 times last season. In four seasons at Virginia, Huff averaged 7.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.6 blocks in 101 career games and helped his team win the 2019 NCAA Championship.

Jay Huff was also incidentally waived by the Washington Wizards

So really, this was practically a straight swap between the Lakers and the Wizards of Ayayi for Huff

We need wing defense and threes. He seems to be a 3&D player. What position does he play?
NBA titles since the merger: LAL 11, CHI 6, SAS 5, BOS 5, GSW 4.

It's interesting that the Lakers and Wizards seem to have a relationship. I liked Huff at UVA. He's an underrated defender and has 3 point range. He'd be helped by adding some strength and has the frame to do so. The Wiz had more of a need for a big guard like Ayayi than another center and probably visa versa for LAL.

Hmm. So, after Frank saw DAJ in practice, he called Pelinka and said we need a young center.

I would’ve thought we’d first cover for losing Ariza and THT but I can dig.

It makes sense to play AD as a stretch 5. It opens up the lane for LBJ and RW, and it protects AD. Same with Melo and Ariza. Stretch the paint apart.

So, it makes sense to have a young body to ride for long minutes and who stretches the floor similarly to AD.
