Is Bynum or Bryant more valuable to the Lakers?

Post#1 » by pooteeweet » Mon Jan 14, 2008 7:26 pm

Watching Bynum squirm on the ground I came to a realization; I'd almost rather play a handful of games without Kobe than without Bynum, especially going into a stretch of the season where points in the paint and interior defense are going to be at a premium. I went back and forth mentally with myself over who had become more valuable to this team. Maybe I'm asking a different question than who is the MVP of the Lakers. I'm asking; who do the Lakers need more to win, Bynum or Bryant?

Kobe Bryant.
Bryant is a proven winner and champion. He's a veteran all-star and can step it up against the elite teams. His game's against Boston this year is an excption, however Andrew Bynum totally disappeared in both those games.

Kobe is the engine, Drew is the turbo charge.

without Kobe, Drew gets tripple teamed all night, we lose.

without Drew, Kobe gets tripple teamed, we have a chance to win.

Its pretty simple regarding their value:

The Lakers need Bynum in order to be great.

But, they need Kobe in order to win.

Without Kobe there's no foundation. Bynum simply takes us to the next level.

I was going to ask this same question but didn't want to get blasted or be overexcited about Bynum. That being said, I would honestly say I think we're so thin at the C; PF that Bynum is more valuable to us right now. OUr team has SG's, PG's and SF's pretty deep. But now we're relying on Kwame and Turiaf? That's a glaring weakness in our game.

Oh I'm sorry...Kobe for MVP.

Big men win you Championships. Been that way for the last decade. Atm I say Bryant is the most important but in 12 months time and Bynum is still producing these kind of performances and numbers then I will say him.

See, this is tough. I'd still have to say Bryant now, becuase he is, Kobe. Yet at the same time, Bynum's time to improve is just as valuable to our team as kobe himself, which makes the timing of this injury even more heartbreaking.

Kobe is the ship
bynum is our anchor.

Agree with Snaq and J-Rob.

Kobe can carry a pack of D-league, AARP, euro-rejects into the playoffs by himself. He can average 35+ points a game and deadlift our team. He already has.

But Bynum is the yang to Kobe's yin. He's the jelly to Kobe's peanut butter for a championship sandwich. He's the jab that sets up Kobe's 4th quarter knockout punch.

Of course most teams would take Bynum over Kobe right now. That has to do with age and contract. I would imagine most teams would take Bynum over Duncan. There's a possibility that after Bynum's performance, he is THE most valuable commodity in the league.

But if you wanted to win a championship right now, the two players who will get it done are Kobe and Duncan. They've proven it over the last 10 years. Both have had significant help, but they have proven that they have been the best perimeter and post players in the league.

It's not even close. Kobe is the foundation and most needed on this team. Bynum is getting so many easy looks because kobe demands double and triple teams. Bynum is doing great, and I hope he continues to improve, but let's not go overboard. The guy is only getting 12&10. I mean our coach would rather have kwame starting over bynum. Let bynum play great for a few years before we even think that he is more important than kobe.

Yup plus Kobe was able to take us to the playoffs these past 2 years kinda without Bynum this year his progression just put us over the top .. love Bynum but this team is still Kobe's

Bynum is no where close to being as important as Kobe is. Bynum's whole game revolves around the attention Kobe draws from the defense.

There is not a gray answer to this black and white question. No maybe's, no 50/50's, and no if, and, or buts... it's Kobe, period.
