Would you trade Kobe for Bynum or vice versa assuming all other pieces were in play and the situation was the same (injury)?

Would you even have to think about it?

Tradition states that you don't trade young big for older small, but this is Kobe we're talking about here. I'm just curious as to what everyone thinks. Not designed to be a slap in either one of their faces, and I apologize if there are those that take it as such.

What is Bynum's ceiling?
Will his knee injury have any effect?
When will Kobe begin to decline?

Bynum is a great young talent. But he hasnt showed me anything in the ways of him being able to create his own shot and carry a team. Not saying he cant, but he gets a lot of love at this stage in his career from playing with Kobe. Not that its a bad thing.

I have similar thoughts....there's just always that what if? What if we get 24 years of KAJ?

EDIT: I am not saying Bynum = KAJ

The fact that I find myself even thinking about it is pretty amazing considering the past year or so.

I just read over it again and I think that I asked the question in a confusing way, although the general idea is there.

If our 5 was Bynum, Gasol, LO, Fisher and Farmar - would you trade Bynum for Kobe?

If our 5 was Mihm (assume healthy, I know I said all things the same but just work with me here), Gasol, LO, Kobe, Fisher - would you trade Kobe for Bynum?

EDIT: I don't know if I would pull the trigger on either one....I really don't and that scares me a little.

If the Lakers didn't have Kobe, and could an injured Bynum for him, oh hell yeah, time to be contenders with that move. I still think we'd be contenders with the roster we have now. The connection between Kobe and Pau is total sweetness.

On the other hand, a frontcourt with Bynum (once he gets better) and Pau would make a pretty nasty frontcourt. However, that would make Odom the primary ballhandler in our triangle offense, which means major trouble for our team, imo. Kobe creates a lot of open shots for everybody, including Fisher, Bynum, Pau, Turiaf and Sasha. He makes his teammates better, and that's something that's been a bit overlooked this season.

Trading Kobe would leave a pretty major hole in our team. I'm not sure if that's replaceable.

Kobe's just one of those rare, once-in-a-generation type players. Like they say, with Kobe, you've always got a chance.

The philosophy goes, don't trade big for small, but it all depends on who the big and the small is.

Obviously, at some point, it's gonna change. If Bynum gets to that 25-15 every night, becomes a dominant presence on both ends of the floor, while Kobe's a gimpy 36 with broken knees, of course you gotta go with Bynum.

But right now, despite Kobe being an "old" 29, I've never seen him play so unselfishly, intelligently, with a very mature and controlled leadership. I think he's a far more dangerous player now than he was in his early 20s, when he was always trying to do his one-on-one thing.

And this is the main reason that I said "when will Kobe start to decline?"

There are those that would argue he already has and I couldn't disagree more. While he still has his Kobe moments where he really does shoot too damn much, I believe he's playing the smartest, and ultimately, the best basketball of his career.

Kobe will never decline!!! EVER!!!!

Centers don't create there own shots like guards do they have somebody throw it into them and you can just throw it into Bynum and get out of his way so my question is what do you mean?

There are long stretches when I wonder what if Kobe still had that explosiveness of his youth? But then he goes and dunks like he did tonight and I'll settle for the mixture of veteran savvy and athleticism.

But IMO, physically he's definitely not the same. But that's not to be expected, and luckily Kobe's one of the smartest players in the game.

His shoot selection is much more improved also. The guy's like a completely different player now.

I guess Shaq didn't get that call, or Ewing, or Mourning. Only a handful of Centers that can create their own shot.
