Lack of P&K Pick and Roll against Heat?

Post#1 » by Lakerholic44 » Mon Feb 11, 2008 8:56 pm

I kept on waiting for Pau and Kobe to go the pick and roll that was so beautiful to behold against Orlando, not to mention extremely efficient and effective. However, they rarely went to it against Miami yesterday.

I never had the feeling that Miami would win the game, but they pulled in very close for a bit, which to me is when the P&K P&R should have gone into overdrive.

Obviously, the possibilities are great with the P&R, but I'm guessing that the only reason it wasn't used heavily was because PJ wants Pau to get comfortable with the base triangle offense first. Maybe PJ figures that Pau and Kobe have such a natural chemistry in the P&R, that it's more important for Pau to get familiar against weaker teams so that later in the season Pau will be comfortable with the entire offense.

At any rate, it would have been nice to see them work the P&R against Miami yesterday...but a win is a win.

I think the pace of the game sort of threw out the whole P&R routine they do in half court sets.

Trade Sasha before he ruins the Lakers next season.

yeah, i think jax just threw that in as a quick fix for getting him in the offense. no way hes gonna know what to do at this stage with this offensive system.

but hey, its always nice to know that it definitely a weapon when needed.

There were plenty of half-court sets, so I don't see how the pace of the game made Kobe and Pau uncomfortable enough to go the P&R in half-court opportunities.

That's what I was thinking, and going up against Orland it would draw out Howard and other Magic bigs and force them to play in the perimeter.

I think in general the Lakers could use more pick and rolls in their offensive schemes. I just don't see why Kobe has to do so much work one on one w/ no help, even though he is capable, compared to say a D Wade who was getting a screen a going right to the hole two or three times vs. Kobe......

I great example of how effective it was on the out let from the Orlando game where Vlad set a pick at like half court and Kobe's guy couldn't recover and Kobe got to the hoop and got free throws......

From the Stockten and Malone days everyone knows how effective it is and now w/ Nash and Amare it just works almost everytime because you either get the wide open J or the chance for the wide open play at the hoop mainly because the rotation on the switch is always late and because they are the reactor and the ball moves faster than any player can.....Oh, I almost forgot the Duncan and Parker who have been torching every one for the last few years w/ the same play at the end of the game. I think it would be benefical to add this into more plays for Kobe, just to give him some more room and opitions--especially w/ the attention he gets everygame and know the perfect player to do it w/ in Pau and even Andrew when he comes back....

I don't know to me it looked like pau was just not in it yesterday.

I saw kobe setting up the pick and roll several times but pau just wasn't looking for the ball he was playing more of a pick and pop almost looking for the rebound and not turning to find the pass. By time he turned to find the pass the lane had been filled and kobe would have to fight around his defender. There was even one sequence where kobe didn't wait for pau to look and hit a bounce pass off of a pick and roll and pau was late to look...he still caught the ball but it bounced off of his stomach before he saw the ball, if it hadn't been a perfect pass it would have been a turnover.

Also a little later kobe drew a double team on the beseline in the second quarter I think leaving pau with a wide open lane to the basket. Instead of running in he just looked at kobe. Kobe pointed to gasol directing him to make the cut which pau did...but by time pau caught on obviously the defense did as well and the pass was picked off. Kobe was frustrated on that play and yelled at pau it seemed like kobe had enough of his lagging...so I don't think phil was telling them not to run it. It looked to me that kobe was running it but pau was lagging...his back might very well be bugging him from day to day. He said he's ready for all star week to rest up. Could be part of it.

Pau was a little out of it yesterday, but he will come back strong tonight. There will be plenty P&R's in kobe and pau's future.
