Feb. 12, 2008 -- The addition of Pau Gasol moves Kobe Bryant closer to winning an NBA title, but also pushes him further away from claiming his first MVP trophy.
Fact. In the past, Bryant was applauded for single-handedly carrying the Lakers on his back. KB24 supporters said not only should he get props for taking a team lacking talent into the postseason, but also for being the best individual player in the league. With Gasol in the fold, Bryant will have to share top billing from time to time. Of course it is still his team, but there are going to be plenty of nights like last Friday where Bryant dropped in 36 points and his new wingman fired in 30 of his own. Will the addition of another superstar prevent Bryant from getting all of the MVP attention he deserves? Maybe. Does he care? No, especially if he gets a
fourth ring at the end of the season. And in case you are keeping track at home, the new-look Lakers are 5-1 since Gasol started wearing the purple and gold.
The Lakers acquiring Gasol is a bigger shift of power in the West than the Jazz trading for Kyle Korver and the Suns dealing for Shaquille O'Neal.
Fiction. The Korver trade has made Utah one of the deepest and scariest teams to play against. The one thing the Jazz were lacking was someone to come off the bench and stroke it from deep. Korver fills that void and then some. He is averaging 11.1 points in 20 games since being shipped to Utah. While his production may not appear to be earth-shattering, the Jazz

yes the double standard is really sad. garnett plays with two other all-stars in the weak east. when kobe was putting up 35 a night, but was on a team that was a few games over.500 alot of people were saying his team isn't good enough for him to win. now he has a good team, having better players will hold him back?
i've come to realize that kobe is the type of guy that will not be fully appreicated until he leaves the game.

it's okay he still hasn't won a ring, and probably never will. I'd rather have a ring over the MVP award any year. After all Kobe knows he is the best, and all fans know he is the best too, that's why they hate him so much(atleast not in LA).

Double standard on Kobe? I thought we should all made our peace with that by now. Media hates Kobe, it is that simple. They will find ways to screw him in the MVP race no matter what. Kobe is more concerned with the championship ring, not a stupid award they give to a chokester in the playoffs just because his team had good record.

(1) The smartest kid in the school typically is not voted the Homecoming King
(2) Imho Kobe actually has a great shot at winning it this year. If we finish with the best record in the west (or very close to it), and he continues to manage each and every game with the same focus and effort he shown over the last few games, he will have defined the award.
Don't sleep on Kobe for MVP THIS year...despite what Kobe-haters in the media are saying now.

Kobe, for the majority of his career, has been a cantankerous baller and a prima donna.
That's not debatable, IMO, and I'll refrain from listing examples as we all know that would be a waste of time and take up too much bandwith in here.
For this part, he has been disliked by teammates, coaches, other ballers, and the media.
He also happens to be one of the hardest, if not the hardest working baller in the NBA. Also, currently, he's the most clutch player in the NBA. His skills and game are appreciated by everyone in the league, even though he's despised. Of this I'm 100% sure. Every baller and coach out there has to appreciate and respect his overall game.
However, that doesn't mean they have to adorn him with accolades and rewards. And reward they don't, when it comes to handing out hardware.
IMO, it's laughable that that Nash, who is a putrid defensive player, has gotten two MVPs while Kobe has not gotten even one of them.
However, as a person, I dislike Kobe, because of his cantankerous nature. If he wasn't on the Lakers I would route against him because of his negative attributes. I'm a Lakers fan, not a Kobe fan. I guess what I'm trying to say is that Kobe has never gone out and endeared himself to anyone (but he's shown signs of it this season) and because of that he'll continue to be disliked throughout the league. He doesn't kiss anyone's behind...and that's one thing I do like about him.

Well, if Steve Nash won it...then Chris Paul deserves heavy consideration.
He's well liked throughout the league (that's the first hurdle), he's got his team in the upper echelon in the WC and with less talent than other teams. He's the main reason why David West is in the all-star game and why Chandler gets so many easy layups and dunks. Also, he's already a better defender than Nash and a better scorer.
Kobe won't win it because of his tirade this past summer.
Lebron has a better chance than Kobe because he's universally admired and nowhere near as cantankerous as Kobe.
Kobe has deserved it for a long time, but people, in general, can't stand the guy...and that's a shame, because he should be judged based on his game and not his personality.
