NBA Wants To Create European Division Over Next Decade

Post#1 » by numbas » Wed Feb 13, 2008 11:03 pm

SI.com -
League source tell SI.com's Ian Thomsen that the NBA is considering creating five teams in Europe over the next decade.

The five teams would form a European division and play a full 82-game season.

"Say you put five teams there in NBA buildings and see what happens,'' the NBA source said of plans to expand to Europe. "Because then it's out of the hands of the governments; it's an American company with American divisions operating in Europe.''

i think its a stupid idea with all teh travel and if those teams r jsut european players their gunna all have losing records vs the US teams

Flying overseas back and forth would suck.

This move is only fair if they reduce the number of games every team has to play a season. Teams need can't stand flying over there all the time while playing such a tight schedule.

Old news. They've been trying to do that for a while now. See some old threads on that in the general board.

Not a good idea at all !

If they want to creat an european division, they should at leats reduce the number of games played per season to 60. Otherwise, it will suck and affect the fatigue.

Yeah. That way, David Stern won't look like such an idiot again when he hands out the trophy and says, "The World Champions..." As it is now, he comes off as a representative of an extremely stupid, uneducated and ethnocentric people who calls their country the world.

When did the "World Champions" BS come into play in the first place? It's like a joke out of an Austin Powers movie, where the stupid power hungry american billionaire crook decides that his country is the world. The World Champions of America?

I can tell you one thing, if Stern wants to include Europe, he'd better make a push for the NBA to start recognizing all those countries as part of the world. Then, maybe they'll talk to him.

What the hell is wrong with "National Champions". Works in every other civilized country in the world. No wonder that the rest of the world has such a problem with us as a self proclaimed leader and world police.

The traveling won't be as bad as a lot of people think, because they'd probably have all the current NBA teams have a 5 game road trip each to Europe. That's 30 of the 41 home games covered for all 5 European teams already. With some small 3 game trips etc, they games will be filled.

The Lakers just went 15 days on the road with 9 straight road games. Flying to Europe and then playing 5 road games there won't be bad.

The Euro teams would also have to be on road trips playing 4 away, 4 at home etc often, but they can work it out to be a reasonable schedule.
