Kobe Bryant has sustained a torn ligament in his right pinkie and has decided not to undergo surgery that would sideline him for six weeks, the Lakers said today.

Bryant initially hurt his finger Feb. 5 when the Lakers played New Jersey. The injury was originally listed as a dislocated pinkie, although the team revealed today there was also a complete tear of the radial collateral ligament and an avulsion fracture, in which a small fragment of bone had been pulled off by a tendon.

Bryant, who saw hand specialist Steven Shin in Los Angeles today, will try to play through the injury instead of having surgery. If he opted for surgery, he would face a six-week recovery process."My current thinking is to give my finger some treatment and rest for a few days, and hope I can still continue to compete at a high level after that rest," Bryant said in a statement. "I would prefer to delay any surgical procedure until after our Lakers season, and this summer's Olympic Games. But, this is an injury that myself and the Lakers' medical staff will just have to continue to monitor on a day-to-day basis."

No surprise he's going to gut it out. Kobe's nothing if not a gamer supreme.

The Lakers revealed on Thursday that Kobe Bryant has a torn ligament in his right pinkie, but has decided against surgery that would sideline him for six weeks.
"My current thinking is to give my finger some treatment and rest for a few days," Bryant said in a statement. "I would prefer to delay any surgical procedure until after our Lakers season, and this summer's Olympic Games. But, this is an injury that myself and the Lakers' medical staff will just have to continue to monitor on a day-to-day basis." His finger has a complete tear of the radial collateral ligament and an avulsion fracture, meaning that a small fragment of bone had been pulled off by a tendon. He might still play in the All-Star game, but has been ruled out of the 3-point contest, replaced by Dirk Nowitzki.

Gotta love Kobe's determination. I didn't hear any complaints or excuses about his finger either. He would've willed this team on his back to the finals with a dislocated finger.

hmmm....

blessing in disguise perhaps?

let him rest on the less important games...and let young kids gel?

if so does that hurt us at all?

maybe when bynum and ariza are back, kobe is much better by than..?

otherwise......DAMMIT!!!!!!!!

As much as I wanted to see him this weekend he just needs to rest and rehab that finger.

Can it get better from just resting it??? Or will it always be injured until he finally gets surgery*... Id rather him just have the surgery if its anything like the Wade situation last year....

it can't heal completely by resting, but from what i have seen, this injury has already all the damage possibly. the tendon tore completely and took a tiny chunk of bone with it. about worst case scenario. so i don't think it can get worse due to complications of the injury. But i am no expert

No, I dont think it will be 100% until the surgery is done. But he doesnt need to re-injure or make it worse doing a silly All-Star game.

There are 30 games left and we need him there for this playoff run. Not to minimize this inury but it is in his finger and he should be able to give us enough if he plays through the pain.

It can get fixed over the summer and all is well.. but its too risky to have him sit for 6 weeks for just a pinkie.

We need W's and we really could use home-court advantage.

Man you guys are overrating it. It's an injured pinkie, and you don't use it much when it comes to shooting or playing defense.

I know as all of y'all should. It's a pinkie man, he can play thru it. He's fine.
