Spurs Acquire Kurt Thomas
February 20, 2008 - 6:42 pm
Yahoo!
The San Antonio Spurs have acquired Kurt Thomas from the Seattle SuperSonics in exchange for Brent Barry, Francisco Elson and a 2009 first round choice, according to sources.
Orlando was also said to be interested in Thomas.
Earlier in the day, it was reported that the Spurs could use Barry and Elson to land Ron Artest

Personally I think its a good move for them, but they still wont be able to handle Bynum and Gasol.

Good move for Spurs, but this most likely puts them out of the Artest race... If Denver gets him.....
Iverson/Carter
Artest/Smith
Melo/Diawara
Kenyon/Nene
Camby/Hunter

Wow, great move for the Spurs. Thomas is severely underrated: very good defender, can stick the mid-range J, and a solid passer. He's gonna be a big-time contributor.

Thank the Lakers gods it wasn't Artest.

thomas fills a much bigger need than artest would have. duncan/thomas is a great defensive duo for amare/shaq and gasol/bynum.

Not much of a slit wrist type deal, but it's clearly a reaction to them realizing they will have to battle two bigs on the Lakers and Suns front lines.
But they damaged themselves by trading away another 3 point shooter in Barry.

Spurs needed another big and they got one who is pretty good, but if they really want to play against Suns and Lakers, they also need more athleticism up front. I have a hard time seeing Kurt Thomas stopping Bynum's alley hoop dunks. Elson was their only good athlete up front and without him, they are even slower than before. It was a good trade but doesnt address all their problems.

the west all went big except the mavs who went small. the mavs are completely screwed unless they pick up a big by the deadline. good move by the spurs..............nothing way over the top but definitely gives them needed depth up front

meh... he will help them and they are dangerous, but he doesn't match up well with Bynum and he's just made them even older... the future keeps getting brighter

i see no reason why duncan couldn't guard bynum while thomas guards gasol. duncan/thomas are as interchangeable as a pf/c can get.

Good deal for Seattle. They traded for him and got some draft picks and only gave up a TE and then traded him again for more expirings and more picks.
The Presti/PJ connection surely gave the Spurs the upperhand to get this deal done.
It helps them but I am not overly worried about this.

People are misremembering the Kurt T of 3-4 years ago - he is 5 hard fouls and not much more now. Artest was the deal to put fear into other western teams for the Spurs, that would've been some nasty perimeter D. Now they've used all their bullets and still can't handle Gasol, Odom, Bynum, Ronny, and Vlad.

good move for the spurs, not as good as artest would have been
so we dodged a bullet there

I think it is a good move.
1 Kurt is a vet and knows the game well, also is a very good defender, rebounder, shooter (at times) and pick and roll player.
2 He is an expiring contract at 8mil I think
3 You get rid of Elson, who was stinking it up

I dont know the details. If the multiple firsts were included, Id say SA overpaid. If not then Id say its about equal.

that will give them more power in our area of weakness right now. the boards. they will get stronger on the inside rebounding game. and right now, gasol alone cant do it. we need help there. hope bynum gets back soon.

Ouch;
the old just got older can't believe they didn't go after Artest,
Lakers in 08 who knows; but they are going to be the feature team to beat.
