One of the cool side-stories to getting Pau Gasol is the frenzy it's caused for Spanish fans of the game. There's been tons of coverage, game by game, of Gasol in LA. They're positively giddy over there. And you've seen the yellow and red flags waving at Lakers games. A Selection:
Spanish Basketball Fans Overwhelmed by Pau Gasol's Immediate Success (Associated Press)
Conversation with Phil Jackson (Mundo Deportivo - Spanish)
Interview with Pau Gasol (Mundo Deportivo - Spanish)
Pau on Shaq and his teammates (Mundo Deportivo - Spanish)
Also, the fan poll on Mundo Deportivo for who will win the title is goin 66% Lakers

he's obviously a huge star over there and now that he has found a team that will be great, the fans come out in droves to support him

Theres so much people there that hate him. So much anti-gasol there because of being in memphis, a team that maybe doesnt catch the attetion of ppl.
The problem, is that tv were always with memphis games and there are so much fans that wants to watch other teams, other games.
Last season it happened with toronto. Always on tv the raptors and no lakers, spurs, pistons, etc. etc. games.
now i guess people is glad to see kobe most of times beside pau

This is great news for the owners, as they can expect even more revenue as a result of the Spaniards buying up Lakers merchandise left and right. It'll help us keep a strong team together since it helps offset those pesky luxury taxes.

Media & ppl has gone really crazy here, ive seen people who had never watch an NBA game and even NBA haters (yes, they exist) being awake till 4am to see Lakers games these days, really the expectation generated by Pau & Lakers is similar to the one we had when the world championship back in 2006. You can see NBA news around main newspapers some of them even above soccer (main sport here), and ive even seen a couple of lakers t-shirts in the street this past week.
I've been Lakers fan and NBA fan my whole life since the showtime days (as my nick says) and i really went crazy when i heard about the trade, was something worth the 2002 championship, we were REALLY tired of watching Grizzlies games, actually i havent seen a single one since Pau left Memphis.
So yes, Spain is now a Lakers nation, and by sure merchandising can be huge here.

I completely agree with you, fellow countryman. Spain has been always a Laker Nation, and now our pride has been really strengthened with the addition of Pau Gasol. I have been also a Lakers fan since our last Dynasty (I am only 19) but, believe me, when I have enjoyed the most with the Lakers where in the last seasons, anyway I am now really happy with team standings and I
