Bill Plaschke:
Lakers' Buss knows when to hold 'em
Again running his team like a well-played poker hand, the owner has Lakers back in the chips after three lean years and one stormy summer.
March 2 2008
The best owner in the history of professional sports is strolling through his sprawling hilltop home when he comes upon an ornate wooden door riddled with three gaping holes.
It is the door to his private elevator. It is also, perhaps, the portal to a philosophy.

... and good read, BTW. Glad things are good again between management and Kobe. Nothing would be more pleasing to see Kobe retire a Laker.

Greatest owner of all time.
He wants to win as much as anyone.

We'll see how much he wants to win when it comes to this off-season and signing players with the MLE.. also extending players like Ronny, Ariza, Sasha.
Credit to him though for taking on the money for Pau.

^True. Buss has done a good job, but keeping this team together might be expensive...add Lamar to that list.

I think the DUI was a wake up call that he was asleep at the helm. Nice to have him hungry again.

I wonder how many cakes Kwame dropped in front of Busses house.

LOL at Kwame and Buss being good friends and neighbors. Great find Intensity. Hopefully we can get Buss his 9th Championship. It does feel good though to be blessed with an owner dedicated to nothing but championships. It's sad to see cities like Seattle, or New Orleans who are struggling with their owners, fan attendance, and could lose their teams. I could never imagine that in the city of angels.

I have to apologize to DR Buss. This summer I had my doubt's with him but he is The Best Owner in the Business.

Outstanding article.

Greatest owner in the NBA, bar none.
Buss said he has looked at Kupchak's lack of big trades before the Gasol deal the same way he looks at his beloved poker.
"When somebody asks why I didn't do well in poker, I say, 'Why don't you just give me your pair of aces for my two jacks, then I'll do fine,' " he says. "You just don't go out and get a good player that easily. I knew what Mitch was doing, I knew what his difficulties were, I think he's done a fabulous job."
I think all of us that questioned his dedication to winning, thought that he was just milking Kobe for a few extra bucks, need to go put our heads in the sand for a while.

Me included of course.

"I think Mitch is the most gifted general manager in the sport right now."

It was a good read, but I could think of many other, perhaps tougher questions to ask Buss.
