Of following list of Lakers 1980s-2000s role players, which would be your Top 3?

Michael Cooper
Derek Fisher
Rick Fox
AC Green
Robert Horry
Norm Nixon
Kurt Rambis
Byron Scott

My Top 3 picks would be
(1) Michael Cooper: He was able to stop LARRY BIRD. That alone is reason enough for ultimate respect. Also a bona fide DPOY.

(2) Kurt Rambis: "Clark Kent" is my guilty pleasure. He looked so goofy and was a comsummate team guy, a huster and banger who always put the team first. Not to mention his brawl with McHale...

(3) Robert Horry: bailed out LA several times (76ers when Shaq fouled out, Game 4 vs Kings and others) in clutch time. Good defender, too.

So, what are yours?

lol, just noticed a theme in my pics- defense!

1. Coop. So valuable in so many areas: defense, 3-point shooting, played three positions, could even run the offense in a pinch.

2. Horry. His clutch shooting was an essential contribution to three championship teams.

3. Scott. I never thought he got the credit he deserved. Great shooter and wingman who spread the floor for everybody else.

Some of those guys were way more than role players. Scott led the team in scoring in '88, with guys like Magic, Kareem, and Worthy on that championship squad...

My three...

1. Cooper, the ultimate sixth man, IMO.

2. Horry, Big Shot Bob was just too clutch.

3. Mychal Thompson, key reserve who helped Lakers be the first repeat team champions in '87 & '88 in the NBA in 19 years.

Is this based on talent? Because Norm Nixon is EASILY the best player out of the bunch... followed by Scott and Cooper... OR is this based on our personal favorites?

Nixon was good, but by no means an exceptional role player. I see Nixon more like a servisable body in the roster in the PG position (more like a D Fish in the 3 peat run).

I disagree.. He was a 2 time All Star, and probly would have been one more if he didnt have to split ball control with Magic... as a Laker he averaged 17ppg, 8apg, and nearly 2 steals and shot 50% from the field and never played less than 79 games in a season with us... obviously his numbers decreased once Magic came along, but imo he could have been a HOF PG if he had stayed with us his entire career... Obviously Im not mad about the PG we decided to keep though

I deliberately left this open. I just have this rock solid opinion that rings are not decided by stars only, but rather by the guys who do all the little things like Bowen, Haslem, Prince etc. With the Lakers, there is an extra wide choice (think of guys like Thompson, Grant, Harper, Lue, Rice, Landsberger, Haywood etc etc etc), that is why I made this thread.

This is new school since i was born in 88'.

1. Robert Horry - During the three peat I cannot count how many big shots this man made. Played Tim Duncan really well.

2. AC Green - Helped the showtime Lakers and was still good enough to lend his hand to the 2000 Lakers Championship Team.

3. Brian Shaw - Helped out huge in that game 7 against the Blazers. Started it all off for the 3peat.

80s Lakers Dynasty
Byron Scott - Best 4th option ever.
Michael Cooper - Timely long range bombs
Kurt Rambis - Can't teach hustle
AC Green - Same as Rambis
Norm Nixon - Great, but not like the previous 4.

00s Lakers Dynasty
Robert Horry - Last second shot versus Sacramento
Derek Fisher - 0.4 versus the Spurs
Brian Shaw - Great in the Portland comeback
Rick Fox - Essential to each title

Mac was great, but he was a HOF guy. I know that his role was greatly reduced at LAL (think of Walton with Celtics, Parish with Bulls, Zo with Heat), but a HOF guy does not exactly meet my definition of "role player".

I wouldn't consider Byron Scott a role player. He was apart of the nucleus of that 80's team. IMO he's more definitely more than a roll player.

the only thing that stopped Larry Legend was his own bad back.
Give the guy some credit please. Coop was great, Larry was a Legend.

Eddie Jones and Glen Rice definitely shouldn't be considered role players.
