You know, when I first saw the cover a couple weeks ago, I didn't really get it. I didn't get why Lebron was screaming, and why Gisele was smiling but leaning away from him. It was just one of those nonsense covers to me.
But now that I've seen that King Kong poster, I'm not going to lie, there are some undeniable similarities.
Those two pictures juxtaposed, it looks REAL bad to me now. Also, I don't think you need to be black to be offended.
Even if it's unintentional and purely coincidental, I think people have a right to be offended.
In this case, I find it hard to believe that the imagery wasn't at least expressed subconsciously by the designer. Then again, the details are so EXACT that it's hard to believe it was subconscious. They look too deliberate.
Considering the history of racist depictions of blacks as simian creatures, I think the editor should publicly apologize. Privately, I think whoever designed it is a douchebag and should get his ass kicked.
If it walks like a duck, talks like a duck...it's racism.
After all, somebody in a white hooded robe burning a cross on a black person's lawn could claim he was just cold and needed warmth.
And really, racism is defined by what the victims believe, not what the perpetrators believe. Otherwise, isn't Kramer a comedian? Couldn't he claim black people overreacted to his "jokes"?
I don't know. My ignorance of the King Kong poster prevented me from making the connection, but obscurity isn't indemnity.
To those who are offended, I suggest writing to the magazine and giving them a piece of your mind.
