can the lakers land baron davis?

Post#1 » by TruSkool » Tue Apr 15, 2008 2:31 pm

it may seem like baron davis wont want to stay a warrior...as recently as the last game, he was benched for about half the game because coach don nelson said "he wasnt playing well".

baron davis might want a future somewhere else....and from what i've heard, baron davis and kobe bryant decent friends...

u guys think kupchak can pull another bomb out of his rear and make something work?

...i mite be answering my own question here...but the fact of the matter is that we're well into the luxury tax, and the only way we'd have a shot at landing him is if lamar odom takes a paycut....

maybe one year we can go waayyy over the luxury tax, and after next year ends, either sign odom for less money or let him walk and add a shooter ala jason kapono, etc...
i think we may have other contracts ending also, which mite free up some room to add him...

and i kno for sure baron davis wouldnt mind coming to the lakers and contending....
afterall, he grew up in cerritos, ca.

Sounds great on paper, but I cant see that happening. Then again, we did get Gasol for a human cake Launcher.

I can see it in a sign trade for Lamar.
LO would thrive in run and gun and GS might want him if BD decides to leave for nothing. at that point I would try to ship Farmar and Walton/vladi for a 3.

while it would hurt to see Farmar go, I haven't been impressed by him late in the season.

I'm sure they'd be thrilled to do a Vlad, Luke, Mihm and Farmar S&T.

Davis, Fisher, LLE or draft
Kobe, Sasha, Karl
Odom, Ariza, Newble
Gasol, Turiaf, MLE
Bynum, Silent M, draft or LLE

There. Do it Mitch!

don't get me wrong, I think Farmar has room for growth and he will be a force to be reckoned with in the future (2, 3 years from now), but as of right now not to impressed with his decline in the latter part of the season for the second year in a row.

Baron grew up in South Central and went to Crossroads in Santa Monica. I don't get the Cerritos part.

Regardless, this is not going to happen. We have to figure a way to keep Kobe, Odom, Gasol and Bynum together for the future. Kobe has an opt out in 09 and Odom's contract run out in 2009 while Bynum is due for an extension shortly. There is no way we can land Baron Davis when he is looking for a max deal, highly doubt we are looking to go into luxury for the next 7 years. Depending on how we do in the playoffs, Odom's rebounding is vital for us.

yeah, but it would be a kick in the groin to your roomates so if i was Mitch i'd do it for that reason alone.

LOL good point. But unless Mitch reads this board he doesn't know who the hell my roomate is. Besides, it will be a better kick if they were to lose Ellis. Their fanbase is obsess with that guy. They usually blame their downfall on Nelly or Baron for their failures.

that's absolutly right.

the warriors and nelson in particular, are absolutly GA GA for lamar odom.
whether they'd want to move baron for him is still unknown, but davis becoming a free agent is an obvious huge step towards that scenario.

now, would the lakers want this deal ?
i'm guessing it will depend on what type of salary baron would want.
if it's reasonable (whatever reasonable is...) - i'm sure the lakers will give it a long hard look.
if it's superstar money - i think it's doubtfull.

I think a Farmar/Odom combo could work. BDavis did say he would sign for less with the Lakers according to Kobe.

Something to keep in mind when it comes to this summer's trade talk:

The Lakers will be a complete magnet for veteran free agents this summer.

Who are the free agents of next summer, btw? What veteran should we try to sign for cheap? What position do we aim to beef up?

Maybe there is a way to re-sign Odom and upgrade/complete the roster via the MLE and LLE? It will likely be much more advantageous than trading Odom for Baron.

the one reason i dont wan to get rid of odom is because of the rebounding...hes a freakkin monster getting bored as a small forward...(7th in league)...other than that, baron would provide more assists, more points, more steals, and likely more turnovers....keeping odom would give us the biggest front court in the nba.
but i would do this trade only under 1 scenario.....if the lakers can get rid of another small forward, and add a serious shooter who can start....kyle korver, jason kapono, etc etc

even keeping ariza at the 3 would be perfectly fine

baron davis
kobe bryant
trevor ariza
pau gasol
andrew bynum
(can u imagine our zone defense!!)

or

derek fisher
kobe bryant
lamar odom
pau gasol
andrew bynum

i think id take the 1st team...

the thing that worries me is the clippers making baron a big offer.
if they do that - it may mean that they don't keep maggette, or even livingstone, but if they also draft a good player with their lottery pick - look out...
