Lakers' Bynum to get another medical opinion
Though it was expected the 20-year-old center wouldn't return for the playoffs, the Lakers are now concerned his recovery could extend into the summer or beyond.

Lakers center Andrew Bynum, his January knee injury still preventing him from returning to the court, will seek a second medical opinion, the Lakers said today. He will see Dr. Steven Gecha on Wednesday in Princeton, N.J. While it had been expected that Bynum, 20, would not be back for this postseason, this decision would appear to not only cement that scenario but it also creates concern that Bynum's recovery could extend into the summer or beyond.
Bynum injured his left knee on Jan. 13, suffering a bone bruise and briefly dislocated kneecap. The healing process has been overseen by Lakers doctors and New York knee specialist David Altchek. Bynum has yet to engage in a full practice. It is still difficult for him to put the full weight of his 7-foot, 285-pound frame on both legs and one-on-one drills have caused swelling in the injured knee.
He has one year left on his contract, after which he'll be a restricted free agent. The Lakers this summer could offer Bynum a five-year extension for up to $80 million on top of the remaining year of his contract. If his upcoming exam reveals new complications, however, that extension could be put on hold.

I knew it. Honestly I have had that feeling for a while and I didn't want to say anything but I had that feeling. That is why I said don't be happy yet we didn't trade Bynum for Kidd. I think he will be back but I wouldn't be surprised if it's the playoffs of next year.
We should get A banger center so Gasol can move to pf. Even if he is undersized at 6'9 it's the only thing that makes sence. Just like Kobe needs a defensive minded wing Gasol needs a banger. You need to do whats best for your best players because that is whats best for your team.

from the business standpoint, isn't this a good thing? really he had a couple of good months. Do the lakers offer a max extension based on that?
He looks like the 2nd coming of Greg Oden right now. by chance, could Mbenga work closely w/ Kareem now too?

From the business standpoint, any long term injury to Bynum is horrendous. This is our future franchise center. I'm not much of a businessman but I don't think it's ever good for business when one of your biggest commodoties potentially has a major defect. I'm less concerned about giving or not giving him the max at this point.
That said, all that's changed is he is getting another opinion. There is nothing wrong with that. In fact he should have had another opinion earlier. It's not the end of the world.

It's always bothered me that all this (him missing the whole year) for a slightly dislocated knee cap and a bone bruise.

Dislocations are hard to comeback from I recently dislocated my shoulder and my doctor still tells me I shouldn't play basketball and I just play with my friends.

I'm trying to forget about this injury and just remember that Ariza is coming back soon. If he comes back this year its a pleasant surprise. If it's next year then we're still one of the biggest title contenders in the league.

correct me if I'm wrong (and I probably am) but could this be a good thing? Maybe
1) a challenge on the Laker medical staff
2) possibility Bynum will come back sooner?

1)I think it is a chanllenge and a welcomed one imo.
2)this I am not sure of because it seems like he still has some swelling and some pain and unless the new doc changes his rehab and makes it better, I don't see Bynum comming back at all this season.
the other thing that worries me is now they are saying that it could affect him next season as well.

I'm not sure I buy into this "challenge the medical staff" theory.
He is the franchise center. He is the future of this organization.
You play him when it's safe to do so.
You get as many second opinions as possible from experts around the world.
You don't bring him back this year (or anytime for that matter) until several of the opinions agree that it's safe to bring him back.

It crossed my mind few times of Bynum possibly missing next season, before they even said that. (just random thoughts that goes through a persons head)That could be scary

imo, i would like him to hang it up this year...you dont want your future franchise player to risk anything...especially if his knee still swells up after a couple drills.

People are overreacting. He won't have a Kenyon Martin type of issue here. Microfracture has to do with restoring lost cartilage in the knee which Bynum is not having issues with. He *reportedly* has loose tendons and a bone bruise, both of which do not require any type of surgery that would keep him out all of next season.

Can this be true? I hope so... NO looking real good now, we may need him to win the series.
