Deseret News: Fisher's year of pain, growth
On dealing with the boos and hostility from Utah fans:

LMAO, Fisher and class does not belong in the same sentence.
I know fisher has been classy for you all but he kicked us Utah fans.
Fisher was traded to Utah, he at first refused to report. The GM had to go talk him into it. I wonder if their was a wink wink deal that Utah would release him after the first year.
Fisher also stated that he wasnt about to back somebody up. So they made him the starting 2 guard. And the jazz got killed all year last year by the Kobe, Mcgrady and the all the rest great 2 guards. You all saw how bad out 2 guard spot was lit up.
Fisher said he needed out so he could be with his family getting treatment in LA. He alluded to the fact that he would play for the Knicks or the Nets or he would sit out a year. Before he even was fully released he had an agreement with you guys.
Most people believed that LA must of had the same quality of medical care that NY has. But when we heard that his daughter was still going to NY every month for check ups. We knew it was a lie to get out of Utah.
I read where he lost money to leave utah, He walked out on his contract but signed an equally good one for you all.
While I wouldnt boo him, I just understand why the game fans might.
You guys would boo an opposing player that refused to play for you too.

I'd say that I was surprised by the fact that she goes to a Doc in NY, too. I'm not sure the situation in Utah was so bad that he'd walk away from 6 million, though, and I believe when he made the decision to come back it was still looking like she could be cared for in LA.
I can see being upset about a player leaving, but I still think the booing was classless. You guys also might want to think about Boozergate, too. You love a guy who is a total a-hole money grubbing lier.
I'm glad Utah booed, and I hope they do it again. Motivation is something that helps us out a ton.

For those that dont know. Tatum is a test case for a radical knew treatment that will hopefully keep her eye. She is the only one who has ever been a case study in this and she goes back to NY a couple times a year to continue the treatment she started. Furthermore, she is monitered at UCLA childrens medical center and probably will be for the rest of her life.
The thought that he would do all this to lose 6.5 million and go to a team that was ready to implode and was not even picked to make the playoffs is a little much.
It probably came down to not only having good care for their daughter - but a comfortable situation for the family. Fishers wife is from LA and their is a support system there. One that they felt more comfortable then in UTA. As a parent and I lived ina place that was not comfortable for my family I would seek other options. Compund that with having a child sick with Cancer then its a no brainer.
Fisher has made good money in the NBA but its not like he has carried 50+ million dollar contracts. I would guess that 6.5 is a lot to him and his family. Its alot for anyone. At the time of the release and signing with LA , the Lakers were not a desirable place to play, while the Jazz were coming of the WCF. So, it clearly wasnt money driven -or- team talent driven, it was family driven.
On the flip side, the Jazz were better off for it. They got out of the contract ( which many thought he was overpaid) and they were able to feature Ronnie Brewer as the starting SG for this team.
Cheers.

I understand Cleveland booing and I accept it. Did you hear mass complaints from Utah fans? I dont expect La fans to boo Fish. Can the laker nation understand Utah booing?

The misunderstood aspect of Fisher's leaving Utah for LA is that it was never fishy at all.
The procedure used on Tatum's eye was new, it was innovative - it was an alternative to removing the eye. The doctors who knew how to do this were in New York, at Memorial Sloan-Kettering.
One of the ex-colleagues of the surgeon who performed the surgery moved to Los Angeles.
Thus, there is a real, tangible medical advantage for Fisher and his daughter to be in Los Angeles. And every month, he takes Tatum to the children's hospital in Los Angeles to get a CT scan. Part of the treatment is to prevent the cancer from spreading, so they need to constantly monitor it.
That's no slight against the doctors in Utah, it's just that the specialists are located in just a few cities, including New York and Los Angeles.

What's funny is that I know the doctor (indirectly, second degree) in LA who's taking care of Fisher's daughter. If I recall what my source said to me correctly, he was an ophthalmologist (forgot which specialty) who worked under the operating surgeon in Sloan-Kettering in NYC.
Small world.
If I were being paid for this, I would actually make some phone calls and pull some favors to confirm the details.
But yeah, the initial reporters did a piss-poor job of making it clear why it made medical sense for Fisher to go to L.A.

You know what's funny about both of your posts Miles and Phil , No matter how you cut it dice it slice it , these Utah fans cant see any reason other than Fish hated Utah and wanted to play for the Lakers .........
Phil knows about the heated argument we were involved in on a Sat night on the general board , when me and him took on all the Jazz fans on ONE THREAD and no matter what we came up with it was the same dance to the same song.
At least Phil tried to reason with them
All I was doing was after I gave up was clowing them with KIND WORDS until the thread got locked and about 5 Jazz fans got suspended for their kind words directed to Fish , his daugther and me and the Lakers .......... I sure miss those guys ...........
