Jazz Say Gasol is a Difference Maker ...Ultimately it came down to shooting percentage (57.4% from the field for the Lakers, 44.6% for Utah) and free throws (35 of 43 for the Lakers, 13 of 16 for Utah).
Korver pointed to another factor beyond the score sheet, the man who has catapulted the Lakers in just three months from playoff hopeful to championship favorite, Pau Gasol.
Kobe Bryant might be the league's MVP, but that prize might well have eluded him again had not Gasol come to the team in a February trade to replace injured Andrew Bynum in the starting lineup and give opposing defenses another threat to worry about.
"He is so long," said Korver of the 7-foot-tall, 250-pound Gasol, "that all they have to do is throw the ball up and he is going to catch it. He has the longest arms in the world. And if you commit everyone to stopping him, that is going to free everybody else up."

Utah teammate Deron Williams also pointed to Gasol as a key to the new-look Lakers.

"He's not a shot blocker," Williams said, "but when he gets in the lane, he sure makes you think about it."

Nice I always notice how long his arms are. I've never seen a 7ft guy move that fast down the lane, kinda reach up, and everyone is going, "that was a dunk right?"

The thing they didnt mention is how much easier things have become for Gasol because of Kobe. They seem to be taking away from how good Kobe really is. Or is it just me?

he also has great hands. he snatches some fast balls out of the air and rams them in! whoever guards him is in trouble. when kobe drives the line, his defender must come over to compensate, when that happens, its layup drill all over again.

The interesting thing with that article is that the Utah players sound like they've already accepted the defeat. It would be one thing to say those things after having been eliminated, but to say it now...?

... and Bynum. Both Pau and Bynum have very long arms, great hands, excellent court vision and passing ability.

Besides his dominant intelligence and feel for the game, Pau's most important strength to me is his quickness. He runs the floor like a deer and he's rather quick on his feet on defense. He'll be able to keep up even with smaller and quicker PFs when Bynum comes back.

If teams think we're long now, just wait until Bynum comes back. We'll be unstoppable. Add to that the fact that Ariza is quick enough to not only guard, but to shut down Iverson. In theory, we could sport a defensive total shut-down line-up of Ariza, Kobe, Odom, Gasol, Bynum. Talk about long... The scary part is that there are plenty of ball handling and playmaking skills in that line-up.

How would the opposing coach match up with that?

Pau and Bynum will easily be the longest, tallest frontcourt tandem in the league. Pau's only going to seem that much better when he has a big, physical shot blocker next to him.

I've never been the type to be make loose boasts, but if we had a healthy Andrew Bynum giving us 30 good minutes a night I'd be tempted to just pencil us in for the title. Oh well -- it's not an option so no use worrying about it now.

I'm just keeping my fingers crossed we can figure out what's wrong with him and get him on the road to recovery for next year.

he does have long arms, not as long say Manute Bol or that chinese gentleman that helped save dolphins with his long arms. But he does have long arms which makes it seem like he doesnt need to jump when he dunks, kind of scary. Reminds me more of a rik smits, but with more versatility. THANK YOU MITCH for trading for him, greatest deal in the books for this year.

Then add Bynums two logs reaching to block unwanted shots in the paint alongside either on help defense or vice versa. just sounds great!!

As funny as that is, it might actually be the most reasonable option.

I knew that the Lakers were gonna give the Jazz huge problems with their length. Boozer struggles immensely against taller forwards, and Deron's not all the finisher with 3 2 7 footers roaming the paint.

Well that lineup has very little shooting.

Kobe can spread the defense at the 3 and Ariza was starting to get an ok 3 towards his last few games but Odom's J is really inconsistent.

I was thinkning the same thing yesterday when I was watching the game about Pau's arm length. He's not much of a leaper, but his arms are so freakishly long that it compensates for it. However, I do think Andrew has longer arms. He just looks like a black gumby out there. I've seen him in person, and his appendages look surreal.

Gasol and Bynum have terrific reach, great hands. It's going to be a devastating front court when Bynum returns. Gasol is deceptive with his reach, because his footspeed is actually fairly slow. He doesn't really beat his defenders, he just extends those arms for a surprising dunk. It's a terrific attribute for him, and it helps our team.

On the other hand, why isn't he using that reach to grab more rebounds? Because his base and upper body is weak. Oh, well, can't have everything.


I think the real question is, who has the longest legs in the NBA?

Pau does have long arms as well as Odom Throw in Rad a tall gaurds Kobe, and Ariza Pretty long!! Tall line up and fast gives teams fits with Turiaf's shot blocking wow no wonder teams are just freezing up! Denver & Utah look like they just give up playing them have you guy's noticed that?
