Horry: Spurs Pop better coach than Lakers Phil Jax
Since no player in NBA history has more playoff experience than Robert Horry, his opinion counts for plenty. In Horry's opinion, Popovich ranks at the very top among the coaches who worked during the 16 years Horry has played in the NBA. Though three of Horry's seven championship rings were earned under Lakers coach Phil Jackson, who has won nine titles as head coach of the Michael Jordan-era Bulls and the Shaquille O'Neal-era Lakers, he gives Popovich the nod over Jackson. "Phil wouldn't yell at the top dogs," Horry said. "Pop will yell at the top dogs, just like he yells at the bottom dogs. That's the biggest key. And Pop preaches defense a little more than Phil. "If you'd have given Pop all the talent Phil had, I think he'd have more rings than Phil." -- San Antonio Express-News

Man I knew he was old, didn't know he'd gone senile on us.

I dont read too much into current players giving their current coaches the love.
However, I find it funny Roberts last statement ( Horry is one of my fav. Lakers of all time) He said, if Pops had the talent Phil. Last I checked Pops had the same talent every year that was pretty darn good. Not taking anything away from Pops or the Spurs .. but he has his chances to win 2-3 more rings over the past few years. His talent didnt decline.

It would be interesting to see how Pop deals with a bunch of scrubs like Smush, Kwame, and the young undeveloped guys we had when we were a two bone headed plays from knocking the Suns out of the playoffs.
I imagine we'll get to find out soon enough if he doesn't retire first.

Horry is a douche for saying crap like this. It's cool to give props to the one you're with, but at the expense of putting somebody else down? Classless.
And it's funny, like Horry has the right to criticize Phil's coaching? Phil let Horry's lazy ass just chill for the entire regular season, showing up only for the playoffs.
And he sometimes didn't show up, as in the '03 playoffs when Horry shot like 15% as we got eliminated by the Spurs. Maybe if Horry didn't cruise through the regular season he'd be in better form for the playoffs. He's just mad that he got cut.
Big Shot Rob, or Big Mouth Rob?
Wow..

Wow, Horry is senile? No.
What's wrong is that I knew you guys would say that after the article was written. We will find out soon enough who the better coach is...if you guys make it out against Utah.
To phil2.0, I realize Pop has 3 stars and a good supporting cast, but Phil got to ride the coattails of Michael and Scottie, as well as Shaq, to "earn" his chips. Not discrediting him, but why doesn't he start with a team rebuilding? Pop did...technically, at least...he won a chip in 98-99' that Phil called an asterisk for...

I agree , I think Pops is a great coach and I have come to accept that the Spurs are a great team and a great franchise .
But keep in mind those years that he did have talent , it was the Lakers and P.J that basically took them out of those playoffs and championships and Horry was a part of it as well .
Again I think Horry is one of the greatest players that has contributed to the Lakers three peat and success in the playoffs , and as a Vet , if thats what he thinks and thats what he feels then it is ONE mans opinion to me .
Not that I would consider Pop to be a better coach than P.J but I would consider Pop as a good coach .
Nothing more nothing less .
Pop has a lot of shoes to fill to be considered a better coach than Phil.
Before this season , I would have agreed to Horry , but seeing how it took Phil 4 years to get some of our scrubs into contender caliber players , then hands down I give props to Phil.
But Dam Horry pulling a Shaq and Smush Parker on Phil .......

You mean having players like Smush , Kwame , Luke , etc and still ends up taking them to the playoffs year after year when Shaqs Overweight A55 left .
WOW ............. See this why you have no class .
You come on here with your 2 wins and your talking all this mess to OUR Mods on OUR Board when your team hasnt won ISH yet .
Kosskesh Jazz fans .
Always have to go out of their way to prove they have no class .
Dont worry about Pop or Phil , worry about Jerry Sloan .
Even though he is a good coach , he still hasnt won anything yet .
I mean its not like he doesnt have talent on his team .
But it sucks the All time assist leader like Stockton or better yet Malone never won a title ......
And I guess thats why Malone came to LA was to chase the ring since he couldnt do it in Utah with Phil Jackson as his coach .
He figured Sloan couldnt do it after all those years , maybe Phil can ...

Ok, but Pop has had the same level of talent for many years. There were plenty of years that they should have won because they never fell out of contender status. So, to claim that IF pop had more talent he would win more rings is absurd.
EDIT: and let me add. Lets not pretend like tanking a season to get Duncan to pair with D-rob is somehow rebuilding.

well considering jordan and pippen and shaq and kobe HAD NO RINGS until jackson became their coach that statement is irrelavent and also
jackson did rebuild and now this year their a champiosnhip contender
the year after shaq left they didnt make the playoffs then the next year when jackson came back as coach they made it with a worse roster the next 2 years while rebuilding

i'm prolly gonna get flamed for saying this but imo pop is just as good as phil. both have different methods to their madness but they get the job done with great results.
on another tangent, i think phil isn't getting enough kudos for bringing out the best in the young lakers. he's always had the rap of not being able to or not being very good at coaching young players. he's been back for 3 years and guys like bynum, the machine, ronny and farmar have been major contributors in the lakers success. maybe phil will get to bury that stigma after what he's done.

^^ no flaming from me. I think Pop is an outstanding coach.

Ya but Unfortunately , great players and coachs like Phil and Kobe will always hear this type of garbage ..........Oh well Phil had Mj or Kobe had Shaq B.S .
Just like this year , like people did start before Bynum went down .......The reason the Lakers are doing good is because of Bynum and Now its because of Pau .
Peps will always come up with B.S to discredit other peoples achievments .
All I see is that Kobe has 3 rings and Phil has 9 titles and the Lakers have 14 chips ...... Kiss my rings .........
WHO CARES ..........

Pop is a terrific coach, one of the very best in the history of the NBA, I just have a problem with Horry criticizing Phil publicly to pump Pop up.
That's alliteration.

No one said he isnt other than the Flammer from the Jazz board , but to place him in the same level as Phil .
I disagree .
Also I seriously doubt that Horry would ever say something to that extreme .
I mean the Media does tend to twist things around a bit .

Agree, but most everyone does that now. Remember Smush in Miami?

Smush Parker was right, though. Dwayne Wade IS more of a people's person than Kobe. Just ask Star Jones.

Ya but Smush WAS and IS a dirt bag ....We all know that .
Shaq was pissed at everyone From Buss to Phil to Kobe to the Persian guy who sold him all the Galzed donuts every morning at KrespyKremes .
So with Horry , Im sort of shocked cause he has a great relationship with the Lakers and Phil .
Again Im not defending him but I highly dobut that he would compare P.J to Pop and even if he has .
Oh well its only one mans opinion to me thats all.
