Jerry West just said Bynum and Gasol together wouldn't work
Just on Dan Patrick Show 11:20am Est
At least on the floor at the same time together. He said having both getting rebounds will slow down that fast break that is making us so lethal in these playoffs. He implied saying one would have to come off the bench to maximize our success, but both at the same time would not work.

Jerry West is the logo, I don't how he can predit such a thing is ridicoulous. Andrew Bynum will only add another rebounder, scorer in the paint. Odom rebounds will be down sure, Gasol probaly still the same.
The lakers can either post up with Gasol,Bynum or Odom and then on the perimeter kick out to the best player in this era in Kobe and he can get to the rim and just draw defenders, he can pick his posion in the paint Odom,Gasol,Bynum or kick it to fish/farmar/vujicic/radmonovic for the 3 ball. Gives laker alot of options.
If Bynum/Gasol work out, and the bench keeps maturing, and Kobe keeps leading the charge lakers will be one of the toughest teams in the league for years to come.
As sixer fan though wouldn't awesome say at the end of this run lakers make it back to the finals again with an old group lets say far into the future when kobe is old and sixers upset the lakers in the finals like the pistons did in 04 jus a lil revenge for 01 we might have wait awhile for that one.

maybe if kings want to not loose Artest for nothing, maybe they would let go of 2002 rivlary and make a deal for Odom.
Artest would be a good fit in L.A, an excellent defender probaly guard the best player, while he also helps Kobe stay fresh on offense and he as well can fill it up on the scoreboard as well. He is defintley in the top 5 true small forwards in this league, and the winning tradition of lakers would eliminate any problems Artest has and kobe will keep him in check as the leader.

Eh, maybe it's just me, but I don't know how much running we actually do. True, we play at a quick pace and we've got a lot of firepower. But it's not like this team is the second coming of Showtime or anything. Anything we might lose in running ability, we'll make up for with defense and half-court efficiency. To me, the bigger issue -- by far -- is whether or not Odom will be able to function with the majority of his minutes coming at the 3.

If Bynum comes back 100% healthy they don't have to run. They don't have to trade Odom or make any moves except resign there own guys and maybe let an old exstar who wants to piggy back come on board.
They will have 3 allstars and 1 of them is a center, the other a pf/c and the other one is the best player in the history of the game. The 4th player is Odom who just might reach his full potential with Gasol and Bynum playing with him which would make him a star to.
They don't have to run all they have to do is be healthy and show up for the game. They just might win the championship with one of there best players out. Manu played hurt and the Spurs lost in 5 games.
Think how good we are.
There is going to be a new rivalry now Lakers vs Bulls and Lakers vs NY or Brooklyn when Lebron goes there.
Until the Bulls mesh which will be a year and Lebron goes to NY there will be no real competition for the Lakers with Bynum back.
It's almost like a championship team getting the first overall pick who is a center. Bynum is the same age as these years rookies.
Maybe the Blazers will be big competition for the Lakers in the next 3 years if Oden comes back healthy with the Oden-Aldridge-Roy combo because they will have the second best big 3 behind only us and like us they have a possible 4th star in Outlaw.
Although if Farmar does reach his potential and become a 14 point a game pg in the T.J. Ford level the Lakers could be the best team in the history of the league.

Jerry wouldnt say this about his beloved Lakers for nothing folks.
I'm thinking what he meant was in terms of spacing. Remember PRIME Shaq and Elden Campbell? They had issues because of spacing on the floor.
In this case Odom needs to be able to space the floor and rely on his jumper more in order for this to work otherwise everyone is going to crowd the paint and that really nullifies a fast break.
I would like to know how Phil approaches this as well.

I listened to the interview this morning on my way to work
His main point was not on offense.
His concern was with two big guys, the Lakers would have a hard time getting back on defense, and that could become an Achilles heel for them, defensively. He has no concerns with the two big guys on offense.
It was a great interview. Jerry is such a classy guy. It was a pleasure to listen to him last night after the game as he was making the presentation as well as this morning on the DP Show.

Its a great problem to have. If you take Vald out of the starting lineup by starting Bynum you have to believe Gasol can get up and down the floor as fast as Vald can. I realize Gasol will not replace Vlad at SF but it will be getting up and down the floor. Gasol will be a little further out on the floor and have less distance to cover. Bynum should be about as quick as Gasol at getting up and down the floor. Where it will hurt is the outside shooting since Odom is not very good at hitting the 18-20ft shoot. Not that Vlad is either. Kobe may find it more difficult to get into the lane with Gasol and Bynum on the floor together.

^thanks for the clarification.
Makes sense, that will be a problem against some teams that have quicker, smaller frontcourt players.
But we will abuse them on offense, that's for sure, and I think our overwhelming advantage will force opponents to adjust to us more often than not.
Also, good execution on offense helps defense, it buys us some time to get back on defense.
Most importantly, I think Bynum's return allows us to match up pretty well with the top teams in the league.
Celtics: KG/Perkins
Pistons: Wallace/McDyess
Spurs: Duncan/Oberto
Hornets: Chandler/West
Jazz: Boozer/Okur
Suns: Shaq/Amare
Dallas: Dampier/Dirk
I think it's no coincidence that the top teams in the league have conventional frontcourt duos, more or less.

I agree with the logo.
Having Bynum come off the bench is not a bad thing. There are a ton of benefits to setting up our lineup next season like that, so I wouldn't be surprised if Phil did just that.
