Sasha NOTES...

Post#1 » by DubaLakers » Thu Jun 12, 2008 10:19 pm

Just a few things I didn't know about the Vujacic...

Lisa Estrada (former Laker girl, now Laker choreographer) was the one that suggested and I believe made the hair band to keep his hair out of his eyes when he shoots those butter J's. Lisa what are you 50, ease up cougar.

He doesn't shave or cut his hair, revealing his babyface, so the refs won't call everything giving him rookie treatment, since this is really his full season of veteran ball. He won't shave or cut his hair until after the NBA Finals.

I hope he doesn't have a Leon Powe follow up game. More Machine!, Less Rockhead.

 Go Lakers!

dcash4: His name is actually AleksandEr.

I know it's not a big deal to you, but spelled with an E and it has more of a Slovenian tone, while spelled with an A it has more of a Serbian or Croat tone. And since he was born in Slovenia, he was named Aleksander.

Sasha is the common nickname given to those named like that, indeed.

Sometimes "Predrag" (as in Predrag Drobnjak, former Supersonic I think) is given the same nickname. Perhaps some of you remember Sasha Danilovic... he was one of the best European players of his generation, although he did have only a short stint in the NBA.

Sorry for the inexplicable OT. :)

cheers

Interesting. Wikipedia spells it with an "A", but then again, Wikipedia isn't the most reliable source in the world.

In a newsletter by the Slovenian embassy in Washington D.C., Sasha's name is: Alexander "Sasha" Vujačić

Spelled with an "e."

I find it interesting because while born in Slovenia, I thought he was of Serbian descent. If that's true, considering what Big Bird has said, I find it interesting that his name reflects his nationality rather than ethnicity, especially since I assumed the Serbian/Slavic tension was a fairly sensitive issue.

Yes, he's definitely of Serbian descent (his father being an ex Serbian coach; don't know about his mother for sure, but her surname would also incline that).

Although I have to say, that it's not the name that mostly reflects the ethnicity (well, Bosnians were/are the most declined to giving real Bosnian first names even to children born here - names that clearly don't "fit" - I can't come up with a better expression at this time, I hope you know what I mean), it's the surname actually. The "-ic" at the end of the surname usually reveals one's ethnicity. The other thing to note is that a lot of names are used by quite some former Yugoslav countries... Aleksander being one of the many. He also has a sister (Nina) and a brother (Aljosa); which are also both common Slovenian names. :) So yeah, it's clearly not that big a deal in the Vujacic family (at least name-wise).

They've taken it from the Russian language. Sasha is just a nickname of Alexander, just like Robert and Bob, or William and Bill.
