Wasn't he #10 in the trials? I saw the roster, wow, finally they make fantastic picks, no way they lose this one. Does anyone know for sure what # Kobe will be? Thanks.

because in football (soccer) the no.10 normally signifies the best player on the team

Number 10 is not for the best player in soccer^^.

It's usually worn by the "point guard", or "quarterback"^^, of the team, but it doesn't mean he's the best.

back in the good 'ole days in the 60s, 70s, 80s

the no.10 has been traditionally the best player on the team

of course, some players decline as they age and obviously wont be the best player on their team all the time

nowadays players are assigned a number and they keep it until they change it or leave the club

before the modern era, no.10s were almost always the best player on the team on the pitch much the same way it is in rugby because jerseys didnt include names

some national teams still designate the no.10 as their best player

half the time, it was just a coincidence that the best player turned out to be their playmaker/forward

i dont remember a no.10 jersey number ever being retired for this reason

Doesn't the same apply for the #11 as regards to euro footie as far as best player on the team?

Usually a striker would wear that # doesn't have to be the best player.

But I concur on the #10 symbolizing the best player on the pitch. Its always been that way in soccer.

LOL LOL LOL

Do you ever have watched soccer ? ????? There is neither a PG, nor a quarterback, and teams NEVER retire jerseys..Only few teams , as AC Milan (baresi and when Maldini retires his too). Older days, when teams were alllowed their outfield players to wear only between 2-11, No10 used to be the number of the midfield-forward general´s shirt.

The truly big clubs or national teams, never retire any jerseys. Brazil´s No10 was Pele, Romario, Ronaldinho, Kaka and so on. France´s 10: Platini,Zidane. Barcelona: Stoichkov, Ronnie, .... the list is huge.

I think it would have been cool if Kobe wore nr 8 on the US team for old times sake, but 10 is fine.
