LA TIMES: Lakers make Vujacic priority

Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak recently said he would call Vujacic's agent immediately after free agency begins at 9 p.m. The Lakers also will try to keep Turiaf but are willing to spend more money to bring back Vujacic, who might receive a payday of close to $5 million a year.
The Lakers will pay almost $5 million in luxury taxes for last season and aren't expected to dip too far into other options if they re-sign Vujacic and Turiaf. The most the team could offer a free agent from another team is the mid-level exception of about $6 million a season.
"A lot of it's going to depend on the progress we make with Sasha and Ronny," Kupchak said. "I think we feel if we can bring those two players back, and we get Trevor [Ariza] and Andrew [Bynum] back, we'd be happy going into training camp with that group. If we run into a roadblock . . . then we'll have to look in other directions.

Sasha is young, feisty on d-fense and only gonna get better. His shot will improve over time. 5 mill per investment on him makes sense.

mitch was on pms today and basically said the same stuff that he's quoted on in the article. priority is to sign sasha and ronny, plans on calling dj too. besides that, the roster is probably going to be the same with the addition of a healthy bynum and ariza.

If I'm Sasha's agent, that is the entire gist of my negotiating strategy.

If I'm the Lakers FO, I say he made 31.6% of his 3s against SA and 35% against the Cs and averaged 0.8 assists a game in the Finals.
In other words, he was a catch-and-shoot guy who didn't shoot very well.
I still think we are better off with him on the roster because of his hustle, defense, intensity, and hot shooting streaks. But I would not pay him more than $5mil a year.

yeah, and kobe turned into a 25 ppg scorer on 40% shooting. sign him to 12 mil!

We're not talking about Kobe.
We're talking about Sasha.
I like sasha and would like us to resign him as I said in my post, but for him to expect midlevel type money after a subpar performance is not reasonable.
And I really don't see the relevance of Kobe's stats to Sasha's performance.

the relevance is that you don't judge a player's value using 6 games.

How would you recommend the Laker FO judge Sasha's value?
In my view, you pay for performance. Sasha did not perform well in the playoffs, and he certainly did not look to me like a $5 mil a year guy in the Finals.
I guess you feel he is worth that. That is your opinion. Judging by the fact that the Lakers offered him around $2.6 mil, the Laker FO doesn't see it your way.
By bringing Kobe into this mix, are you suggesting Kobe did not perform in the playoffs?

the qualifying offer is simply a formality, not what the lakers think he's worth. you're making it more complicated than it has to be. i said don't judge sasha by a handful of games, simple as that. i brought in kobe to show how ridiculous it is to judge a player on such a small sample size.

Fair enough although "ridiculous" is a bit strong term to use. I specifically stayed away from that word in my responses to you.
I still don't know how much you think he is worth.
I think the Laker FO got it right by offering him ~ $2.6 mil. I have to assume then that you think he is worth a lot more and I respectfully completely disagree.

the lakers might not get to jugde his worth after all, if he signs a contract sheet that is worth the full mle then the lakers can only judge if he is worth it.
