Bynum and agent looking for Max 5yr/80mil

Post#1 » by islanders11040 » Tue Jul 1, 2008 6:00 pm

Bynum;s agent is looking for a 5 year 80 million max contract. i hate the way the league is turning towards max contracts being thrown all over the place. Bynum would at least need to prove he can play for one more year. i liked how bynum said he would sign for less than max but these agents are really inflating salaries even though i kno its their job

While the Lakers were making an announcement about their intentions to keep restricted free agents Sasha Vujacic and Ronny Turiaf, Andrew Bynum's agent announced his client's intentions.

Bynum can get a contract extension this summer from the Lakers. When his agent was told that Bynum suggested he would be willing to take less than the maximum of five years, $80 million, David Lee said they would be seeking the maximum.

"He was talking as a 20-year-old," Lee said in a telephone interview Monday. "He had not consulted with his representatives. I think the Lakers know how we feel about this."

The Lakers extended qualifying offers to Vujacic and Turiaf on Monday, which allows the team to establish a right of first refusal.

If Vujacic, whose offer was for about $2.6 million, and Turiaf, whose offer was for about $1.3 million, sign an offer sheet with another team, the Lakers can match the offer and retain them.

Both Vujacic and Turiaf are seeking long-term deals and hope their agents can come to an agreement with the Lakers.

The free-agent shopping period started at 9:01 p.m. Monday; players can't sign contracts until July 9. Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak said recently he would begin negotiations Monday night.

The Lakers could have a potential dilemma with Bynum.

He missed the final 46 regular-season games after he suffered a knee injury. He had arthroscopic surgery May 21 to remove some cartilage debris and smoothing some rough spots on the underside of the knee.

Bynum, a 7-foot, 285-pound center, has said he should be ready to start training by the second or third week of July.

"The ball is in their court," Lee said. "They've got a decision to make. The question is whether they believe in him the way I believe in him. It's their decision to make if they want him there for the future."

Bynum averaged career highs in points (13.1) and rebounds (10.2) last season. But he has played in just 163 games in three seasons.

"I don't think the Lakers have anything to worry about with Andrew's physical condition," Lee said. "The only thing is he wants to stay in the purple and gold. It's in their court."

Lee sounds like an a-hole. I'd be offended if I was Andrew. Even if the plan was always for max, which I imagine it was... first he keeps Andrew out from returning(I'll bet you anything he could have been in the finals) then he talks down to him for talking like a 20 year old. Father knows best? jeez.

If I were the lakers, I'd offer Drew the max with the caveat that he loses the agent for someone else.

This is what happens when the media and a franchise overhype a player to much. Bynum was good but he still only got 13&10. No one deserves 5/80 with those kinds of stats. now if he could get 20/10 then maybe. He has heard all the talk about how different it would have been with him,and now he and his agent are feeling themsleves. I mean the guy hasn't even been an allstar yet,and we made the finals without him.

Yeah I thought this was going to happen...

He needs to prove he can play before he gets a huge extension...

I see something getting done quietly mid-season... That's if he's really interested in staying like he says...

Otherwise he could pull a Shaq and demand a trade... I really doubt that happens because he value can't be the highest right now after missing as much as he has.

I think coming out now and stirring the pot is just a leverage technique by the agent. He's just trying to get the trade offers flowing to bump up the price...

I like Bynum but I've always sort of felt that there might be a possibility of him trying to bolt for more money somewhere else. Just a feeling based on a few statements he and his family have made...

The ultimate catch 22. There's absolutely no way Andrew deserves that kind of contract, but there's absolutely no way the Lakers can risk losing him. Oh to have the bargaining power of a young 7-footer with a good 1/2 season under his belt.

Welcome to the NBA's Overpaid Club, Mr. Bynum. You've already met Mr. Gasol, Mr. Odom, Mr. Walton and Mr. Radmanovic. Mr. Vujacic will be here shortly.

If he offer him a qual ofer ---then he will become a restricted FA after next season and we have the right to match and other offer.

Sign him after this season for a max deal if he proves he can stay healthy and play 35MPG for a season. If not, good riddance. He is NOT worth a max deal at this point. Not even close. The max I'd give him would be 5/65 RIGHT NOW.

21 year old player should not make 16 million per year.

Next off season, wont he be a restricted fa? I say, if he really deserves that kind of money. Lets just wait till next season to do it. If he impresses the league and someone offers him that, we could match it right away.

This is a great deal, I know other teams will try to offer him the max I think, because he is a beast. He is the next best center in the NBA, and deserves that kind of money. Any less, would be an insult to such a great dominate center like Andrew Bynum.

Wow if Bynum's agent wants that kind of money then I think the Lakers will pay the money and our hopes for a dynasty will be gone because we wont have ANY space to get quality role players, oh man this could turn out ugly. Bynum seems to want to stay here so hopefully at the end he's down to sign for less than the max. I mean, i believe in Bynum, not because i'm a Laker fan but because I watch him play closely, he's not even 50% developed yet and he's already DOMINATING, of course stats won't show that because he fails more often to score because his offense isn't developed well yet. He's only 21!!! I really feel confident that he's the next great center and if Kobe misses the start of the season i think he'll step up and turn the Lakers' D into an insurmountable beast!

I think he's worth 5/50-60 i mean i don't think we should pay him more than $12 mil a season, it's just not a worth gamble, his talent may be there sure but what if his knee hinders him and we end up with a huge bust!

Someone needs to thank Rashard Lewis for these NBA players wanting to be overpaid. But after this season and throughout the playoffs Laker fans and the media been hyping up this what if Bynum was playing during the playoffs scenerio. Bynum is back heathy and want the max. The irony...

If the Bulls do, you would be complaining to much to ever hear it.

NBA fan logic we need to trade one of two best players because (Player X) one needs to shine more.

The reason the NBA had a strike/lockout shortened season was because the agents were filling the players heads with a bunch of bull. Agents in sports run the players unions one way or another.

Bynum is a standup guy. He might just be 20 but he has a spine, class, intelligence and good natured intuition. That's more than you can say about his agent. What a douche. Talking down to his client as if he has no brain. I wouldn't be shocked to see Bynum giving the agent a piece of his mind. If he wants to play here, he wants to play here. His agent should do what he can to keep him in LA, and should not put his own interests in front of his clients'. I'd bet money that Bynum stays here for less than max.
