Posey Officially Ditches Celtics, Lakers in Pursuit!

James Posey, after deciding not to exercise the option on the final year of his contract yesterday, is a free agent with what may be one of the largest markets of the summer.

The fact that there is a limited pool of teams with significant salary cap space (Philadelphia 76ers [team stats], Memphis Grizzlies) does not bode well for the biggest names (unrestricted free agent Gilbert Arenas, restricted free agents Luol Deng and Andre Iguodala) this summer, but Posey’s lower-level aims are likely to draw a bigger crowd.

Posey’s hometown Cleveland Cavaliers are said to be putting together an offer, in addition to the Detroit Pistons, New Orleans Hornets, Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets. New Jersey, which came close to signing Posey last summer before he was talked into going with the Celtics, also may revisit the situation, though like most teams the Nets are carving out cap space for 2010, when big names like LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade could hit the free agent market.

Posey is now officially an unrestricted free agent, meaning any team can offer him a contract.

Now, did he opt out just to get a heftier contract from the Celtics, or because he really wants to go somewhwere else?

Posey's contract was about 3.2 mill last season. Apparently he is looking for an MLE deal (which the Lakers have to offer) that starts at approximately $5.8 million and carries over 4-5 years. Last season, the Celtics split their MLE between Posey and House. My thinking is they may be reluctant to spend the full amount on one player this time, especially if the exception extends into a long-term deal. But then again, Posey was teh X-Factor in the Finals, and Boston has said he's their top priority this offseason, so you never know.

Posey's agent has made it clear he wants his payday. He's more than willing to stay, but he's not taking a discount. Celtics will offer him their full MLE, the question is for how long. THye'd like to make it 3 years, Posey wold like it to last 6 years. My take is taht the agent will shop for a 6 yr deal and then take it back for the Celtics to match.

Boston is still the best place for him to get another championship ring and all the veterans make it a very comfortable place.

Unless the Lakers can also offer something else under the table (recording deal, movie guest shots, etc), I think he stays in Boston.

Remember, the Lakers can offer just as much as the Celtics can.

Correct me if im wrong, but I think there are only two teams that can offer more than the MLE, and those two teams (Memphis and Philly) arent exactly dream destinations.

Lakers are not using their MLE especially on a SF without getting rid of Walton, Vlad, or both.

Well, assuming that Odom is gone with Jordan for Baron...

We must do everything in our power to get Posey to sign with us. We'll need his defense.

Hell, I'd give them Radman as a bonus for Baron if they throw in Belinelli.

How isn't everbody after this guy? Watch the Celtics regular season and you'll see why. He's a Robert Horry type player that steps up when it counts (see: C's and Heat playoff runs). Only teams that are a small forward away from contending should get in line to sign this guy. I actually think it makes more sense to find the NEXT James Posey as opposed to paying a premium on a player who's stock is going through the roof. I find that players like Posey can be grossly overpaid and typically are much worse after they sign their lucrative deal, i.e. Raja Bell, Bobby Simmons, etc. He's certainly an option but I'm not sure if Mitch is leaping into the fray with the full MLE and a longterm contract. That's already bit him twice with Walton and Radman.

You don't think they'd take Odom, Farmar, Radmanovic for a re-signed Davis and Belinelli? All three players are perfect fits with Nelson ball.

Very well said. I too get the feeling that someone's going to go nuts and really overpay for this guy. I'd offer him the MLE for 3 years. If it's not enugh then move on.
