6 years, 63mil for a guy who averages 10 pts and 9.8 rebs!
have we really gotten to the point when anyone who can average a double-double automatically gets 10mil+ a year?

That's the price of young 7 footers who have shown some sort of potential.

Players no longer earn what they get, they just get it right up front. Shaq and Jordan had to wait till there careers were well established and then they got the big money. This seems a way around the salary cap and the rookies salarys.
Just shows the players are making the money but the cap is not increasing enough for all the teams to do what they need to do. I see more players in the future being traded for picks like the clippers did.

Overpaid? Relative to whom?
10m is around the standard for a double-double center not on a rookie contract.
Samuel Dalembert, Tyson Chandler, Brad Miller, Andrew Bogut, all make (or will make) similar amounts of money for putting up around a double-double.
Naturally, there are some deviations.
Guys like Eddy Curry, Eric Dampier, and Troy Murphy are paid that much but underperform. Ben Wallace is paid much more than 10m, but is nowhere close to a double-double.
On the other hand, guys like Chris Kaman, Marcus Camby, and Zydrunas Ilgauskas, are more productive for 10m.
Then there's Brendan Haywood who approaches a double-double but only gets paid the MLE.
10m is standard for a double-double big man. The max is standard for a 20-10 big man.

I love that Beans contract. Show me the damn money.
Sincerely,
Andrew Bynum

Pretty standard for player with his ability and stats. I wouldn't mind giving that same contract to Bynum. $63M for 6 years comes out to $10.5M a year . . . way better for the Lakers than a maximum contract!

Overpaid or not they managed to keep they're players except Baron, but signed one of ours, the clips and seem to be a smigit under the cap... not a bad offseason for them...
MITCH!!!!!???

Bynum is going to ask for more money than Bogut and Beans.

This will hurt the Lakers also, because Bynum has room to ask for more money

Biedrins's contract would hardly set a precedent for Andrew Bynum...
more relevant is the probability that if Andrew Bynum were a free agent, a good number of teams would offer him the max.

I think Biedrins is overrated, but this isn't considered overpaying. At a young age and not being favored by Nellie to run plays for him he can obviously improve on his numbers.

i dunno, to pay a guy 10mil a year, when honestly, i dont see him improving too much, seems ridiculous.
i mean thats the real difference between him and a guy like andrew
andrew can be an all star
andris can be an all star back up center

u see any equivalent (or greater) production that young? D. Howard/ Bogut/ Bynum/ Chandler/ Al Jefferson/ maybe Greg Oden- each will be/ have been paid more after 3rd/4th year extension
u see any aging players commanding around $10.5 or more- Camby/ Dalembert/ Dampier/ Big Z/ Kaman/ Miller/ Ming/ Shaq/ J. O'neal/ Okur/ Wallace
What 10.5 million pays for:
1. 11th leading rebounder in the League
2. Rebounds per 48: 1. D. Howard 18 2. Camby 18 3. Biedrins 17.2
3. FG% 1. A Biedrins 63% 2. T. Chandler 62%
My point: excellent signing, perhaps a bit much, but worth every penny.
There is only about one good center per draft and one great one every 3-4 years.
AB is NOT great.
AB is good. Right now 7th Center in the League (DH, YM, SO, GO, TC, MC, then AB)
We got him at a fair price w/ time and security to grow.
If he's putting up 35 min/ 15 pts/ 12 reb/ & 2 Blcks by 2010-11 we got a steal!!!

I don't think it's Biedrins Size to set the price. It's warrios policy to overpay
They like to overpay and trade: Murphy, Dunleavy, Fisher, and now Turiaf and Biedrins.

Where are the warriors finding all this money to sign so many players to long term deals. Seems like they are spending wild and not caring about the cap or lux. tax. Well it will catch up to them, it does for every team.

Although I like what he brings to the table it dosen' t really surprise me in the age of "Potential & PER". Payment should be based on definate results. If things were done this way EVERY team would be able to effeciently build thier teams correctly.
Even the NFL is having issues paying guys before they produce over proven vets and this is the same. What good is showing me some PER averages when the player will never play close to the full 48 minutes , so why pay for it?
Constantly hyping players this way is why we will have to break up our team this season just to pay bynum ( while I like this guy very much). How many times do you hear throughout this site that this or that team is building a dynasty or is set for the future, or so and so is a gauranteed allstar. HOW MANY OF THESE HOF PLAYERS CAN BE SPREAD OUT TO EACH TEAM. One team wins the chip every year no matter how much talent the rest of the teams have, yet there are so many claiming dynasty for their roster.
If teams ever stopped overpaying for potential it would put less strain on worrying about losing your guys because they would be affordable. Guys are coming into the league so young and some older players stick around so long that the salaries build up so quickly and leave no chance for things to even out.
Bird rights are in place for good negotiations and mostly players will only leave if they really wanted to go or in trades. This keeps the chances of someone stealing your top players low.
With the unproven player salary continually rising and the lux-tax amount not so much what happens to all the teams when they get close to the max and all this talent sitting out here in FA. Also you know that the mega stars like kobe and lebron are gonna get thiers so payrolls will continue to be ridiculous until this problem stops.
