Kobe's Passing (Ability)

In watching his Team USA, when he doesn't have to score, he is an amazing playmaker. He is the best no look passer in the NBA in my opinion, and finds seems as well as any PG when he's on top of his game. Defensively it's not contest during Team USA, which helps lead to him being a facilitator on the offensive end. I like this Kobe, obviously this isn't possible during the regular season (unless wade and lbj and howard come to the Lakers, one can dream), and we did see some glimpses of this during the season/playoffs, but I really underestimated his passing/playmaking ability outside of the drive and kick and attracting double teams.

What's remarkable is that there are some pretty damn good playmakers on Team USA, such as Lebron and Wade, and somehow Kobe is handling that role so smoothly, seamlessly. The guy isn't pressing, he's not forcing shots, he's picking his spots, getting his teammates involved, making the game easier for them. He's been very underrated in that capacity.

It really goes to show how awful Smush and Kwame were...as well as some other players.

But whenever Kobe's been surrounded by quality talent, he's really made the game easier for his teammates.

What's interesting, in the Road to Redemption videos, Coach K referred to Kobe as one of the team's point guards.

But what's even more interesting is that he's played that role in all-star games too.

I'm not one to throw the active-GOAT label around lightly.


Kobe has strengthened his passing skills naturally due to the extra experience that he gained out of the Triangle Offense as a facilitator and from getting multiple covers thrown at him in crunch time.

I believe he can become an even better passer as he gets older if he plays more inside the FT line.

But he would need solid facilitators (that aren't liabilities on offense) to feed him and snipers to hold the help defense back.

It can be done, so...

actually, and more appropo to some, ironically, kobe has always been a GREAT passer, go back and watch those championship runs, no one has ever before or since, fed the daddy like kobe could, to name an example.

that being one of the things that the haters always say/said about kobe"he doesnt pass/cant pass..

My beef with Kobe's passing skills is this:

When he is in "distributor mode" he does a great job of setting up everyone else. However, he often tends to lean on the side of being too unselfish. He may even pass up easy looks for himself by trying to force a pass.

On the contrary, I think the issue is that as a true "2 guard" and the incredible confidence he has in making almost any shot, no matter how difficult -- he tends to put up bad shots when he is in "scoring mode". Oftentimes, missing guys that are open.

He is not like Magic that the game came easily to him. eg - "I am going to score, but if help comes I will find the open man and he'll make you pay." MJ had an uncanny ability to get up in the air, look for his shot but if it was not there, drop the ball off to an open teammate. By no stretch of the imagination am I suggesting he never took bad shots, but I am sure you can recall in many MJ highlights him doing just that (eg - drop off pass vs Knicks when he came back and put up 55)

All I am saying is that Kobe just played basketball and made the right basketball play everytime, he'd become the most unstoppable force in the game now. As it is, you can't argue that he can't dominate through his scoring. But if his numbers went from 27 ppg 6.5 asst to 24 ppg and 11 asst...

I am waiting for him to see the light, but honestly the dude is a killer 2 and it may be asking too much for him to play like Magic or CP3.

All I know, that in NBA2K I average 26 ppg and 17 assts. This Kobe makes even Radman look like an all star at times.
