We basically traded Shaq for Odom, Gasol, and Farmar

First Lakers sign him in 96
8 years later, we send him to Miami for Odom, Butler, Grant, and a future 1st rounder
Grant is later waived as part of the amnesty clause
Lakers trade Butler for Kwame in 2005
Lakers use the draft pick Heat sent in 2006 to pick Farmar
Lakers trade Kwame for Gasol
When you think of it now, Lakers definately won this trade, but Heat did win a championship.

You're forgetting about Bynum seeing as how that trade had us lottery bound.

The stars did align in a way for this to happen, however, you can't evaluate who won/lost the trade by taking that many factors into consideration. Obviously, Kupchak did not have this grand plan evisioned. Everybody talks about how Kupchak proved his worth this year, but what did he really do? The Grizzlies gave us Gasol for the best expiring contract available, that's all there is to it. This was not some wizardry on Kupchak's part, we were just in the right place at the right time with the right contract available. Next, Fisher came to LA for his daughter. Again, the medical facilities that his daughter needed were in Los Angeles. This should not be considered some miraculous move by Mitch. I do believe that the Ariza trade was a good move on Kupchak's part, for he is a piece that we are and were in desparate need of.
I am not saying Kupchak did a terrible job this year or anything, I just don't believe he proved himself to be one of the top GMs in this league.

This thread is so incaccurate.
Lakers traded Shaq, MARC GASOL AND TWO FIRST ROUND PICKS for Odom, Pau Gasol and Farmar.
Marc is way younger than Pau and could become a pretty good center in the NBA.
Not to mention that trading Shaq for Odom, Butler and Farmar and keeping Butler and Marc would have been even better.

Don't forget about including Chucky Atkins for Brown leaving the Lakers w/ Smush
Shaq, M Gasol, Atkins, 2 1st for Odom, P Gasol, + Farmar + 3 years lost of Kobes prime
Its a wash

Yeah
Of course , please don't forget we traded Shaq's wife as well!
She doesn't contribute to play, but she keeps Shaq occupied thinking how to avoid paying her lots of $millions and poor Shaq cannot concentrate in game!

There are many other things to signing Shaq, like giving away George Lynch and Anthony Peeler to clear extra Cap room to sign the Fat Man in the first place, then there was the $30 million (or whatever it was) we paid Grant to just go away..
