Guys not to be negitive here but if Yi went 4th because of the asian market and he was sopposed to be really good a clearly is a bust and Sun went 48th if he was a real pro with alot of potential wouldn't he have went lotto to first round?

Recap if you can't watch it.

He was interviewed by a black guy (sounds like American) from the Chinese national tv. It was 16 minutes long.

He talked about his understanding of the role of a PG, his performance in the Olympics, his love of the game, his expectation of the new season -- easy for him to adjust because of his familiarity of the SoCal, he'll work on his game if he doesn't get much playing time.

BTW, he said he is a fan of James.

I wouldn't call Yi a bust his numbers are good not great i doubt another Yao is coming out of China anytime soon I think Yi will be good player in the league. We'll have to wait a little bit for Sun but I would say there is a 50/50 chance he becomes a contributer looking at the 4 players that came from China before him, Zhi Zhi and Bateer were clearly busts and Yao and Yi have either clearly established themselves or started out there careers on the right track.

How can Wang and Bateer be busts when they were taken in the 2nd round? Alot of 2nd rounders don't even make a roster let alone contribute, which Bateer and Wang both did.

Anyway, Sun Yue will carve out a decent career in the NBA IMO. Best case? He could be a Dunleavy or Turkoglu type of player.

Wang and Bateer were busts because they are no longer in the NBA. They might be nice players on the Chinese national team or Chinese leagues but they were not NBA material.

Just having him on the bench will pay some of the lux tax. If he on top of that can contribute, fine. He's an asset to the team either way (and its future trades).

Yi was the 6th pick and he wasn't picked just because of the "ASIAN" market.

Sun Yue was the 40th pick. Sure Sun Yue had/has potential, but so do a lot of other players in the draft. There are other players who have slipped in drafts as well, so I'm not sure what you're trying to ask. Not many people, if any, projected Sun Yue to be drafted in the 1st round. I wasn't expecting the Lakers to draft him, I thought Derrick Byars was going to be that pick.

I wonder whatever happened to Derrick Byars?

Why do you say that? Have you ever watched him play for an extended amount of time?

He's basically a marketing tool to tap into the asian market. Purely just that.

You are just a tool who's speaking out of your ass. When you are ignorant, you might want to avoid speaking, so people won't know that you are (Please Use More Appropriate Word). You have to be good to have marketing value. It doesn't matter if you are Chinese or Argentinian or French, if you are no good, your jersey ain't selling anywhere. There are plenty of players from China, why ain't they all drafted and signed by NBA teams? Sun Yue was drafted last year, LA didn't sign him because he wasn't Chinese last year? NBA teams don't draft or sign players based on what country you are from, people need to get that dumb thought out of their heads. Being Chinese just give him some bonus marketing value IF he turns out to be good.

Teams normally stay away from players that have no intention of coming over the year they get drafted. That is why they use 2nd round picks on them.

Tiago Splitter is a nice young big but teams avoided him. Spurs took a chance on him at the end of the first round and now he just recently signed a contract to stay overseas. This is a guy that drafts had listed in the top 10 for the last 3 years.

Scola 57th, Barbosa 28th, Diaw 21st, Tony Parker 28th, Saer Sene 10th, Nocioni was a undrafted FA signing.

Trying to use draft position as a tool to judge a players ability is seriously flawed.

That's precisely why we traded for Pau Gasol, because Los Angeles is teeming with Latin Americans.

...Only an uneducated fool would make such an assumption. Players are signed primarily for their potential to contribute to the success of the franchise, any other advantage is just a perk.

I'll fix this.

We signed Sun Yue to appeal to the Asians.
Signed Pau to appeal to Spanish/Europeans.
Signed Kobe to appeal to African Americans.
Signed Luke Walton to appeal to Whites.
Signed Kwame Brown to appeal to losers.

Yi was drafted by Milwaukee w/ the smallest Asian population of any NBA team because of his heritage not his potential. Why wouldn't Milwaukee pass and get a guy who likes deer hunting and let Yi go to NY, SF, or LA.
