Tex Winters on LO and the Lakers

Post#1 » by iamworthy » Fri Oct 17, 2008 1:38 am

"I don't know if the twin towers has ever been effective, has it?" he asked. "It kind of puts one of 'em (Bynum or Gasol) out of position, particularly defensively. That's what makes it tough."
The lineup seems even more problematic when you consider the fact that Jackson is trying to improve the Lakers defensively.

• The Trevor Ariza Prize: "Ariza has been by far our best player. He's looked pretty good throughout camp. He's not a great shooter, but he's got lots of energy and length. He really picks us up."
• Legs, Legs, Legs: He wonders if Kobe Bryant's legs aren't worn out. "I don't know whether he's tired or those legs are dead. He's been on those legs a long time with the playoffs and then the Olympics. They might be dead."

Ariza possible breakout year? I wonder what the Lakers told him in the exit meeting last year. I know they told him that he definitely has a future there but I wonder what else. After the exit meeting he signed his player option to stay with the lakers. He didnt even look to see what he was worth on the open market. Tex had some interesting comments about Kobe's legs. Im not going to worry about Kobe until later in the season. He's a professional, so Im sure he's going to take care of his body the best way he can. Plus if this team gels the way we all think they can his minutes should be cut down.

If Kobe doesn't have any legs, and yet he's beating everybody else in sprints, running backwards, I don't like what that's saying about the rest of the team.

Twin Towers has been effective: David Robinson and Tim Duncan as a recent example. Pau and Bynum just need to move their asses on defense.

Ariza still hasn't improved his shot? Well that's going to be limiting, no matter how good everything else is.

Gotta love Tex, though, he calls it how he sees it.

Tex da man. Respect is all he will get .. hehe.

Hopefully this will be Ariza's breakout year. I want him to posterize people like how he used to. I saw several glimpse of it until he was injured.

Kobes' legs? why is he checking out kobe's legs? lol. The way kobe trains (insane), he'll have plenty of strength.. but isn't Phil going to limit his playing time to several seconds? hehe jk.

Twin towers worked with the Spurs, i don't see why it wouldn't with the Lakers, we got both offense and defense on the boards. I can't wait to really see these guys in action during start of season. They should incorporate alley oops like crazy.

Rumors of the demise of LO are way premature...

My understanding of "not having any legs" is more leaping ability than sprinting. It's not uncommon for shooting guards to lose their legs around 28 according to the Sports Guy's dad (he was worried about the Ray Allen trade last summer).

That said, I'm not going to chalk them up to "dead" yet, but in that last pre-season game Kobe did look like they were tired. Even despite that he was wily and effective. He's just going to change his game if he can't shoot over people as much. Maybe we'll see more posting up.

Also, Miles...nowhere does Tex say Ariza hasn't improved his shot. He said Trevor's not a great jump shooter, to which I think even Trevor would agree. Though Tex did say he has been "by far the best player in camp" -- that's encouraging.

Twin Towers was coined in Houston with Hakeem and Sampson, and while they didn't win the ring, they did get all the way to the finals losing to 86' Celtic team that is considered on of histories best teams. C'mon Tex, he's sounding more and more like Phil all the time. I think he's trying to motivate Kobe.

When tex refers to twin towers im pretty sure he means only bynum and pau, he would have to be pretty senile to say that in reference to other twin towers. So far in the few minutes they have played together in preaseason, our twin towers havent been effective. IMO LO starts in the beggining of the season(as our PF) and we give our twin towers more time to gel and will be used more often deeper into the season
