Let Kobe Go

Anybody else think we should let Kobe walk after this year?
This will be his 13th season, the mileage/wear and tear on his body is taking its toll, and the last thing we want is a declining superstar eating a max contract.
Kupchak's checklist:
* Give Bynum his Max and build around him and Gasol.
* Extend Odom (hopefully 4-5 years, $45-55M) -- he has less wear and tear on his body--his contract also comes with much less risk. He can come in as PF when Bynum or Gasol are winded/injured, and is a perfect SF with the second unit.
* Pay/Keep Farmar
* Paykeep Ariza
* Pay somebody to take Walton and Radman.
* Seek a starting caliber G, ruthlessly
If we let Kobe go, we free up cap space, get younger and cheaper, and keep the rest of the nucleus (Farmar, Ariza, Vujacic) during their prime seasons, and have the flexibility to add some key role players at a position of need.
If we give Kobe his max, we pray that his body holds up during his 14th-19th seasons, and are in cap hell for the duration of his contract.

Obviously my first thought was consistent with everyone else. But thinking about it (and stop reading now if you think I am giving the OP too much credit), it seems the OP has brought up a very interesting idea.
Just think, Kobe has the highest value of maybe any 30 yo NBA player in history, other than MJ himself.
We have a young Bynum, healthy Pau and Odom, nice complimentary young players like Sasha, Jordan, etc. (and its clear bigs can play better than guards into their late 30's).
If we could get a relatively young star and unload a bad contract with Kobe, its worth considering. It'll never happen, but its very interesting food for thought while we sit on our hands until Tuesday.
Interesting post, thanks.

Well, the idea of building around Gasol and Bynum seems illogical. We have, already. We have built a champtionship contender and we are still very young w/Kobe. These are the kind of teams people dream of and to take a step back? Rings are too important and too hard even get near.
Kobe has yearS left at a high level. This is his team and he has a great one to lead to multiple rings. Taking a step back while letting one of the best players on the planet walk....only to hope to get where we are
now. Seems ---- Insane.

I think the only way to objectively look at this post would be to reevaluate after the season is over.
Right now it's way too soon to tell. Bynum, though with huge potential, needs to prove he can be there when it counts. We also need to see how he, Pau, and Lamar all play together. IMO way too early to assume it's championship caliber.
The spirit of the post, which is economic, could actually hold water. However you'd have to take into account how popular of an athlete Kobe is, and how much money he brings in, since after all he's the most popular player worldwide (according to jersey sales).
Whereas if we're talking just about cap space...there's no way to know:
a) if we do win a championship this year, that the group we'll be able to afford (with Lamar/Ariza/Farmar all up for contracts and Bynum up for an extension) will keep us in a position to repeat. Bear in mind that losing Odom from our bench is going to leave a GAPING hold...not sure where we'd replace his production from. (That's assuming Odom has a healthy and productive season).
b) how much Bynum is going to be resigned for.
c) how much Ariza would be able to command.
d) if Lamar would be willing to take a pay cut
e) if Luke can stay healthy so we could afford to lose Lamar/Ariza/Vlad.
f) if we could trade Luke....../Vlad/Ariza/Lamar.
Really it's too soon to tell. And really unlikely.
Though it's an interesting point...because you look at the numbers, and unless these guys take large pay cuts (which doesn't seem to be in the cards...at least with Bynum) we're not going to keep this team together. Thus, it will be interesting to see by the end of the season who we should resign and who we can afford to let go.
Yes. Kobe is 99% of this board's favorite player. But how big of an extension are we expecting him to sign for? and will we be able to keep the players around us to stay top dog in the West?
Shaq and Kobe's dynasty was broken up because we ultimately couldn't pay both superstars and fill in the bench with capable talent. The FO has some tough decisions ahead.
Good luck, Mitch.

kobe alone probably pays for bynum/gasol/lamar's contracts through publicity and shirt sales

I think the people have spoken. I'm afraid this will escalate into something we don't want.
