Bynum & Lakers close to 3 yr 42mil Deal.

It's been reported that Bynum and the Lakers are close to settling for a 3 year 42 million deal with an option for a 4th year. This makes both sides happy as Bynum gets the max per year, but also limits the Lakers long term liability if his career doesn't improve. If this goes through, I'm just glad to see it get done.
After a period of limited progress, one source familiar with the negotiations said the Lakers and Bynum are close to agreement on a three-year contract extension worth approximately $42 million.
For the Lakers, the desire to lock up a player who has shown the potential to join the small fraternity of elite big men in the NBA has been tempered by the small sample pool of games in which Bynum has actually performed well. He was used sparingly as a rookie, his production dropped off after a solid start to his second season, then his breakout third year was cut short by a knee injury in January. Bynum is averaging 7.2 points and 5.6 rebounds per game in his career.
The proposed contract -- which has a fourth-year team option -- would give Bynum the maximum annual salary but limit the Lakers' long-term liability if Bynum's career does not continue its upward arc. The longest and largest extension Bynum could sign would be five years and approximately $85 million.

at least they're getting somewhere now... best for both worlds...
now bynum can trade in his 6 series for some real muscle!! hehe
I think it's fair for both sides.. bynum would get close to what his "agent" wants and the lakers wouldn't be tied down to such a long unproven contract.

good deal for both sides especially with the team having the option on year 4. he would get a max offer after this season (barring major injury) via restricted rights but the other team could also offer the max years on the deal

Plus it's nice to get it out of the way. They have Kobe's contract to deal with to lets not forget and correct me if I am wrong but isn't Odom a free agent as well?

Still don't think he's worth that much at this juncture. But in the NBA, who is? Both sides get what they want (Bynum - $$$; Lakers - flexibility) so it's a good deal overall.

Bynum is absolutely worth it. You can make an arguement he is a top 3 at his position along with Howard and Ming. If Bogut gets almost max and Okufor gets 12 mill clearly Bynum who is better then both deserves it. This guy is gonna be a hall of famer. Were not talking about Odom here.

I believe the difference in the two is a team option for a fourth year at $16 million.

per article
Bynum, who will make $2.8 million this season, will earn close to $42 million over the first three years of his contract extension. The fourth year will be a team option for about $16 million
which i think is pretty reasonable for both sides.
