OT: Iverson traded to detroit for Billups

Post#1 » by anti_flag2008 » Mon Nov 3, 2008 5:15 pm

The Nuggets and Pistons have agreed in principle on a trade that would send Allen Iverson to Detroit and Chauncey Billups, Antonio McDyess and Cheikh Samb to Denver, sources have told ESPN.

The deal has not been finalized.

This would be the second time Iverson has been traded in two years. He was dealt by Philadelphia to Denver in December 2006, kicked out of Philly over irreconcilable differences as part of a package that brought Andre Miller to the 76ers.

Not sure why the Pistons want to give up all that for AI. He is a good pg. But he is a free agent after the season and I think the Pistons will be less with AI in there line up. Dice, he would fit into the Nugs as they seem to want every 6'9'-6'10 player to lob a dunk.

Cap space? Are there any big name FAs coming this off season? That seems most plausible to me. Though I thought there were reports that Billups wasn't happy in Detroit anymore, so the Pistons might be trying to cut their losses.

If the deal does go down, does this make the Nuggets any better? How much? And does anybody get cut?

Didnt see this comin, pistons will have a ton of cap room this comin off season. Maybe they'll wanna sign odom or ariza? They should of been aiming for 2010 for the big FA's. I think its a good trade for Denver though, it helps there overall team. But i dont see them doing any damage in the playoffs.

whoa!? didn't see it coming as well...

I think Nuggets got the better end of the deal considering AI is a free agent this coming year like what you guys mentioned. But i think piston gave up too much for AI.. don't you think?

but then again.. it appears Pistons are set for something big in the near future with that cap space...

From the Nuggets perspective, this is an excellent deal in that they are getting a PG who actually knows his position, in addition to being a clutch when it counts and a team-oriented player who is known to be one of the better PG defenders in the league (something that Iverson is not). It's an excellent move that I think will pay immediate dividends.

For Detroit, I'm not so sure. I've never been a fan of Iverson's style of play, and I think it will hurt them this year, but if the plan is to let him go to build for the future, then I think it works out well for them... just not this year. My understanding is that they are looking to move Stuckey into the starting PG spot, as well as freeing some cap space, in which case this allows them to do that.

As for the Pistons going after Odom, I wouldn't count on it. They have plenty of PF's on their roster and they'd be better served by hitting up the FA market to bring in a "game changing" type player. Also, I don't see why they would go after Ariza unless they got rid of Prince somehow.

Yep... next year they could be sitting at $33 million in salaries, which is going to allow them to make a serious run at LJ, Wade, Bosh (?), etc. This, of course, is assuming they are letting Rasheed go, which they probably will.

Well that one came out of left field. Good move for both teams.

Denver- Anthony can assume most of the ball handling and play making roles and they have a better defender and spot up shooter in Billups. They also get more inside scoring with McDyess and Cheik Samb.

Detroit- Get a future HOF who is in a contract year. Possible huge cap space for the future if Iverson doesn't work out in Detroit.

LJ can't be picked up... he's going to play for the New York Yankees when he becomes a free agent.. hehehe just kidding.

that's plenty to sign one of those bigs. I forgot about stuckey, it can cover the role like he did last year when billups was injured.

So that's what was up with AI and Karl the other night.

What a steal by Denver. They will be dangerous. I guess that means Dumars thinks Stuckey is ready to be the lead guard. Detroit also make themselves an instant big player in the next big free agent market. They're still pretty solid with a core of Rip, Prince, Stuckey, Maxiell etc, although I doubt they'll have a chance to content this season.

Love it for the Nuggets. Not bad for the Pistons either, though I have a man crush on Billups' game.

Very interesting trade all around.

Seriously. That was weird.

I agree, but...I think there's a chance AI could help them. He's an underrated passer, and he adds that go-to guy the Pistons were missing (I think they were trying for Melo first, correct?). The biggest drawback is obviously defense, but I have to be honest, Iverson is also an underrated defender because of his great ability to play the passing lanes - which is an automatic score at the other end because he's gone with it.

Billups is a great PG, but A.I. is still a 25-7-2 steals guy - and now he has solid shooting percentages. He's very productive.

It is basically Billups for AI. ESPN is reporting that the Nuggets are going to buyout Antonio McDyess's contract. So Antonio McDyess can wait 30 days and than resign with Detroit or he can sign with another team. I would love to have a guy like Antonio McDyess on our bench with Odom, Farmar, and Ariza.

mcdyess is near the end of his career and wants to play for a sure contender. signing him would be perfect. he can do what pj brown did for the celts last year.

oh ok.. that makes sense now.. they don't want to keep Mcdyess? I mean he can be a very good bench person for them considering them trading one of their best away...

oh well, i don't mind having him on our bench as well.. do it mitch hehe

The addition of AI puts the pistons as the strong number 2 team in the east. I also dont see te cavs beating them in the playoffs if they matchup again.

Local reports here in San Antonio -- or at least, media speculation -- is that the Spurs will make a big push for McDyess if indeed he is let go.

I don't see us even considering it. We're trying to do everything we can to stay on top of our spiralling payroll. I like our roster pretty much as is.

This move could rejuvinate AI. But more than anything, I think the Pistons are just trying to strip their payroll down. Probably not a bad move on both ends -- take one more title run with a new face, then start the rebuilding process.

As for Denver, as much as I like Billups, he seems to have gotten pretty old pretty fast over the past year or so. Still a great player, no question, but I'm not sure I see him making a huge impact in terms of making the Nuggets a player in the crowded West.
