Kobe's popularity extends into the animal kingdom

Dog days

Bryant's popularity even extends to the animal kingdom.

From a database of more than 465,000 pets insured by Veterinary Pet Insurance (indeed, it's medical coverage for dogs, cats, birds and exotic domesticated animals), 359 pets are named "Kobe," making it the 189th most popular name out of 65,536 pet names across the nation.

Five pets in the database are named "LeBron," two are named "Yao Ming," and there's a "Boston Garnett" along with a " Dirk Nowitzki."

The most unusual sports name in the pet world, however, might belong to a Yorkshire Terrier that answers to "Kobe Shaq Jackson."

Bresnahan is a Times staff writer.

nerd moment: anyone realise 65,536 is the square of 256?

this has nothing to do with the animal kingdom, but with Kobes popularity.

I was in the Seychelles Islands for a few days during the olympics and the staff at the hotel where we where at didn't speak much English. I tried to ask the bartenders at the hotel bar if the USA v Angola game was being televised. needless to say they had no idea what the hell I was talking about. I mentioned Lebron and Wade and they just gve me a blank stare. then when I said Kobe their faces lit up and they smiled and a lovely Seychellian bartender rush over to the TV and changed the channels until she found the game. true story.

I thought I was gonna read a Sarah Palin joke when I clicked on this thread. I feel violated.

This has nothing to do with Kobe. Kobe beef is known as the most delicious beef in the world! You can attribute the pet name to the beef itself moreso than the basketball player.
