Will kobe take a paycut?
If the team wins the chip, will Kobe take a paycut to keep the team together? I mean, the man is making loads off of endorsements and such, and winning championships brings attention and money in itself.
Players coming off of contracts soon:
Odom
Farmar
Ariza
Basically the whole bench unit which has been huge. Would it be in Kobe's personality to take a paycut? I know he's matured a lot in the last couple of years; Tim duncan did it to win rings, will Kobe?

Re: Will kobe take a paycut?
I wouldnt expect him to, but I do think its gonna happen (yeah, I think I worded this sentence wrong haha).
I can see him taking less than the max, but I dunno if he will. It would surely be nice if he did though.

Re: Will kobe take a paycut?
If we win the championship.. other than worrying if he'll take the pay cut or not. I would worry if he'll choose to go overseas or another team.... I have a feeling, he's tried very hard and have been working his butt off so that he can get LA another championship on his own...
But back to the question. I don't think he would, only because he knows and other GM knows he can get a very high offer regardless. He's not only a great player... but face it, people love watching him play...

Re: Will kobe take a paycut?
Ya I think he will, I think Kobe is past the money and Kobe want to be the best Laker to ever put on the P&G. Not only by braking every record held by any Laker but winning the most titles ever won by a Laker and to do that if we win anything this year then he will try to keep this team intact and if that means taking less money to keep everyone.
I think he will.
I think he will.

pay cut? i don't think so. i think there's a possibility he'll opt out and resign long term without a pay RAISE.

Re: Will kobe take a paycut?
Tim Duncan did a few years back. I believe he was eligible to sign an extension at $25 million per season and he "settled" for $20 million. In our case, a similar "sacrifice" could be the difference between losing or keeping one of our free agents. Mix that with the $3 million per we saved on Bynum, and that's $8 million extra to spend on somebody else. If, that is, Buss isn't all talk.

I wish he would, but I doubt it. If he does then good for him but I'm not gonna hold my breath on this one,

Re: Will kobe take a paycut?
I think Kobe would pull a Duncan ( as ST mentioned). opt out sign long term and just not make the max per year. I believe KG did a few years back too.
Cheers.

If my job asked me to take a paycut, you know what hell I would make around here at work?

Re: Will kobe take a paycut?
It really doesn't matter anyway because he can only get a 5 year deal on his next contract anyway. Now if Kobe is hungry for money and be greedy like Shaq was, then he ain't taken less even though it would help the team be able to bring in more help. Cause if they win guys will want to come but how in the hell would they be able to pay them ?

Re: Will kobe take a paycut?
According to my calculations, if Kobe gets 25 mil next year, that would give us a payroll of 80 mil without Lamar or Trevor. Then in 2010 if Farmar is signed for say 5 mil per year then the payroll is about 85 mil again without Lamar and Trevor.
How much luxury tax the lakers are willing to pay is anyones guess. But it seems to me that the Lakers have to find a way to keep at least one of these two players or possibly thru a trade , keep them both.

Keep in mind that Fisher comes off the books right when Jordan's contract is up. We should be able to swap one out for the other.

Re: Will kobe take a paycut?
but what if someone decides to offer farmar the MLE? i can even see teams offering farmar what GS gave the fisher (summer 2004)
at the very least get the lakers to match that contract...
unless we lock him up next summer with an extension
not to mention, if ariza continues his high level off the bench, he might get offered something the lakers cant afford to match
lets just hope buss wants to win so much, hes willing to sign blank cheques

Re: Will kobe take a paycut?
It wouldn't be a drastic difference. Fisher is making around $5, $5.5 million, which is fairly close to MLE money. I can't imagine Jordan is going to get substantially more than that. If he does, well, we're probably not going to be able to keep him.
Unless Buss is as good as his word, we're probably going to have to prioritize our three big salary decisions. In my opinion, it's Odom, then Farmar, then Ariza. Ariza is a nice player who seems to really fit our system well, but Odom is vital to our depth, and Farmar is our future starting point guard. By comparison, Ariza might be more of a luxury than a necessity.
Man, if only there was a way to dump Luke, or more specifically, Luke's contract. We're slated to blow $26 million on him over this season and the next four.
You have to love pro sports, where you can be utterly mediocre and still hit the lottery.

Re: Will kobe take a paycut?
Kobe says he is about winning championships. If he is true to that than he would opt out and sign for less than the max for 5 yrs. It would be very smart if Dr. Buss locks up Odom, Ariza, and Farmar. Me personally I think Kobe will decide at his end of the year meeting. If Dr. Buss gives Kobe the impression he is willing to spend the bucks Kobe will feel like Dr. Buss has went above and beyond keeping his promise to make a winner and he will opt out ad sign for less to save Dr. Buss a little money on the luxury tax.
