Thousands ordered to flee as wildfire erupts near Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Five-thousand residents were ordered out of their homes in Sylmar, California, early Saturday as a fast-spreading wildfire burned along on the northern boundary of Los Angeles.

The flames erupted late Friday in the steep terrain of the Angeles National Forest on the outskirts of Sylmar, about 20 miles north of downtown Los Angeles. The blaze covered 1,500 acres and threatened at least 1,000 homes just three hours after it was first reported, according to Los Angeles Fire spokesman Armando Hogan.

Flames jumped the 210 Freeway in Sylmar, forcing its closure, Hogan said.

I hope everyone here is ok, I was watching CNN and heard many many people are being evacuated north of LA.

"I just think everybody needs to stop talking about it," Howard said. "There's more to life than free throws."

I guess it's fire season all over again. The Santa Ana winds are not helping much as well.

I'm great. Sitting in my living room watching TV and eating breakfast. May play some Gears of War 2 soon. How you doing? :D

Luckily the fires aren't effecting all of Southern California.

i'm in brea, there are some peeps evacuating the complex right now and people on the other side of the complex are watering their houses down. luckily it looks like the fires dying down a bit. I'd say the flames are about 500 yards from my house but definitely not as bad as they were. The Morgan Stanley building on Lambert and 57 looks like it may get hit though.

I'm packing up just in case, it smells like $hhht from all the ash and smoke. i was hoping to have some drinks and watch basektball, hopefully that will still happen ;)

Got woke up at 4:30 this morning by a loud speaker telling the nieghborhood to be ready to evacuate if needed. All's good except the ash and smoke now. I am concerned about friends who are now much closer to the fire.

These fires are getting crazy. Unfortunately one of my friends' parents house was burned in the fire in Yorba Linda. Sucks. They are claming that these fires were set by an arson. What an a** hole.

I have some friends in that area as well and I have yet to get a callback from them...i don't know if they are ok. Sorry about your friend. If this is seriously an arson I hope that a88hole get what is coming to him.

To quote a friend, "It's like Silent Hill outside."

You can see a quarter block in front of you now. Eerie.
