Just wondering what you guys think about Jordan Farmar's future. How soon until he starts regularly for the Lakers? How good do you think he'll become in his career? Are there any players you can compare his future to? Thanks for any insights, guys.

Weirdly no player comparisons.
He will be an above average pg. Nothing more.

rafer alston if he puts his mind to it.

He won't start regularly until he runs the offense properly, making the proper passes.

And learning to stay in-front his man. He always sets his feet on his heels, he needs to be on his toes all the time and he needs to not turn his to defend the player wanting to go to the basked. He needs to move laterally instead.

Until then, I just don't see it.

So with Fisher's career winding down, is Farmar the next starting PG for the Lakers, or will Phil try to bring in someone more to his liking?

Until he starts putting at least a marginal effort in on defense, Jordan is pretty much dead to me. It's like he thinks he's going to contract some incurable disease if he bodies up on someone.

I think Farmar is predictably a work in progress and keeps improving in all areas. I think he could start as soon as next season and will be a star level player with the benefit of playing with Kobe, Bynum, and Gasol for the foreseeable future.

Not an all-star, but a star.

farmar is definantly a work in progress. but i just dont see him starting if fisher is still in the Active Roster.

I fought this topic on Jordan before..............this time I'll have to agree with Sedale on this one. Also he must adapt to being coachable and run the offense as it's designed to be run, and not play as he was "taught".

I'll go as far to say he won't finish his career here...............bank on it.

Offensively; He's a good option.

Defensively; He's horrible. He's got to start getting in his opponents face and cause havoc. He gambles WAY too much. That puts the defense in a scramble position and leads to break downs.

He's not going to start for this team until that happens.

i think as they say in poker, we are all in with this kid. after fish, he is all weve got and we are gonna get. weve invested the time and offense around this kid, and he has the experience in the tri to know what to do. if he aint got it by now, make a move immediately in another direction. but at this point, he is going to have to do. and weve gotta place all the rocks in his basket.

Jordan is an enigma to me. He's so up and down. He has all the physical tools to be a good defender. But just completely ranks out of doing it. It seems as if he doesn't want to put in the work and get dirty on defense. It's shocking to me too because he came from Ben Holwand's system which is known for great defense.

How good can he be? I don't know. Don't really care. I'm not expecting him to be our next franchise player or anything. All I want from his is to hit a couple of open shots to space the floor, and play some DAMN DEFENSE! He should not be letting Derek Fisher, who is like 10 years his senior and flat footed be our best defensive option at the pg. It just shouldn't happen.

i read or listened to somewhere that farmar's problem was that he was expecting his big men to chase his man out around the pick and farmar would switch onto the big setting the pick, a by-product of playing in howland's system. he's had been entrenched in that type of defensive system that sometimes it lead to arguments with lakers coaching staff about what he should be doing...

so coming from howland's system has actually made him stubborn about the way defense should be played rather than starting with a clean slate about playing true man-on-man defense

Mo Williams, even a bit better, because I see Farmar as being more athletic with more fire.

Undersized, talented, shoot-first scorer, good range, gets assists on the side. Not a true point guard. Both have their drawbacks on defense - not big enough, not enough wingspan, not strong enough.

I don't understand the Farmar hate...he's not perfect for the triangle, and he's gotten inconsistent minutes throughout his Laker career. His role has changed to being an uptempo scorer on that second unit, off the ball.

I like Farmar a lot, I think he's going to be an eventual starter in this league, but I doubt it'll be on the Lakers. He's too good for his current role on the Lakers, but he's not enough for our team needs.

I think the Lakers will part ways with him this season if he continues to struggle. I think his value is high enough, and I think the Lakers will be desperate enough (their championship aspirations may depend on it).

Classic situation where a player and a team just don't fit. Love his heart, attitude, fire, and his talent.

I don't bet against players like that.

There's a huge difference from college basketball to the NBA in that regard.

Yes, while that was possibly the best option in Howland's system, it's not in the NBA, and it would never work. Big men in the NBA are too talented offensively to let a 6'0" guard guard them. And PG's are too quick to let a 7 footer stay in front of them 25 feet from the basket.

Defending in the NBA is all about effort. If you don't have it, you're going to get torched every night. You have to fight through screens, hustle around screens and get back to your man. You can't rely on the lazy way and help all the time. Man up, guard your man.

i agree with the assessment that he can be the poor mans tony parker

I don't think he will ever start for the Lakers unless we go into rebuilding mode again. he already hit the 3rd year wall.
