1985 Game 6 of the NBA Finals Lakers vs. Celtics

REDEMPTION!!! Ok you guys know how we do it on these throwback threads.
The Lakers in the previous season had basically given the Championship away to the Celtics & it left a bitter taste in the mouths of the Lakers all year long. It made us 0-8 all time against the Celtics in Finals history. That following year ('85) it started off just as disastrous. This was the famed year of the "Memorial Day Massacre" a 148-114 blowout in Game 1 & then went on to win 4 of the next 5 and handed Boston their 1st ever lost on their home parquet floor in their storied franchise history. If not for Dennis Johnson hitting a shot with no time on the clock in OT the Lakers would have won 4 straight. Kareem earned MVP honors at age 38 (a feat that I dont think will ever be repeated) after all the critics said he should retire after his performance in Game 1 where he posted 12 points & 3 boards, then dominated the rest of the series. He averaged 25 PPG 9.4 RPG & 5.4 assist.

I watched this game from beginning to end. I was so pumped. Jerry West was quoted as saying he felt sick all morning & didn't feel good about the game at all. Once he arrived and talked to a couple of players he started to feel better. I remember thinking how did we lose to these guys (the year before) I just knew "Showtime" wouldn't let us down twice. Our whole neighborhood poured out into the streets celebrating the win over the Celtics. A great book mark in Lakers history. Hopefully this years team has that same bitterness in their mouths this year with nothing but revenge on their minds like this team did!

Arguably, it was the best / most important win in team history - and that speaks volumes!

Cap made an amazing comeback after "The Memorial Day Massacre." I loved beating the Celtics, especially after what happened in 1984, when I thought we were the better team then, too.

Holy christ that brought back some wonderful memories. I still remember laughing at how much Kupchak would try and rough up the Celtics. I could never take him seriously but he did his job so well in that regard, that I had to give him major props. I still get dizzy watching how blazing fast that team was, especially when Scott was added the prior season. So wonderful.
