Lakers' Pau Gasol tries to flex for success
Forward doesn't want to be called soft again.
Bill Plaschke
December 28, 2008

Pau Gasol rocked back and forth on his giant feet, smiling, pleasant, distracted.
"You have somewhere else to be?" I said.
"After this interview, yes," he said.

"Where?" I said.

"The weight room," he said.

I gasped. I froze. I could not have been more shocked had Pau Gasol told me he was going to a barbershop.

Weights? Him? When?

"Two or three times a week, since the start of training camp," he said. "I've never really done it before, but I've got to do it now."

Oh. So he heard.

He heard last spring's cries of "Gasoft." He heard Lakers fans accusing him of disappearing under the weight of Garnett and green. He heard himself being blamed for the NBA Finals loss to the Boston Celtics.

He stopped rocking and stared down at me, his soft eyes quickly turning hard.

"I heard it a lot," he said, his voice rising. "I heard it too much."

Good for Gasol. We need that mentality from ALL the Lakers.
Gasol got most of the blame for the Finals loss last year which I think is unfair.

I'm glad he is doing his part to improve his strength and toughness. We need the same from Lamar, DFish, Ariza, Luke, Bynum, the bench mob, and even Kobe.

They need to approach every game with the type of intensity they showed against the C's.

Cheers to Gasol.

I'm actually shocked that he never has lifted weights before.

He probably thought the facial hair by itself would be intimidating enough.

On a more serious note, it's incredible that he hasn't had to do this before. It's also great to now be able to see new untapped potential in Gasol, an already all-star caliber player. I thought he was simply one of those players that will always be thin, no matter what (Motumbo etc). I guess not. Go Pau!!! Awesome news!

Seriously, who really did know Pau was hitting the weights. He looks the same as always. Now I thought it was just the standard for NBA players to be hitting the gym and Gasol in his 7th or 8th season decides to start now? lol

my two cents on this.
First who are we kidding. gasols conditioning has never being a question mark so that means he normally trains, wich means he is lifting weigth.
Second. once you get a reputation is almost imposible to take it off, even if reality and comon sense tell a diferent story.
Everybody knows that if you are going to play in the low post you are going to pay the price, there is where all the contact hapens and where the ref. let more banging.
Now whe have two 7 footers one has as primary offensive weapon a mid range jumper because he doesnt want to be punished phisically and the second is a low post scorer and i just dont understand how the first player is the tougher one, in case somebody didnt guess who i was talking about the first one is garnett and the second one is gasol.
The problem with gasol isnt toughnes is that some times he isnt agressive enough and most of the times thats because he isnt strong enough to impose his body but st least he puts his body to get some punishment and thats smoething i dont see in garnett, but everybody know he is tough he is just a bully

I don't believe it.
Gasol has gained about 30 lbs. since he came to the NBA 7 years ago.
And it isn't fat weight me thinks.
He isn't strong, but he is much stronger than back then
Pau now

i don't know about that, remember how KG, Pierce, and Ray Allen were good players but couldn't win the big one?

or Peyton Manning being good, but would always choke in the big game

I had to miss the third quarter -- en route to a family dinner that I couldn't get out of -- so I didn't actually see this incident. I'm kind of disappointed. There really wasn't anything all that physical about it. More like Lamar gave him an extra-hard hip check and KG decided to fall over to draw the foul. I had envisioned a nice, cheap horse collar, with KG cowering on the ground like a little bitch as Lamar stood over him triumphantly with one foot on his chest.

Sort of a letdown.

At any rate, there are some players I am going to go out of my way to criticize (Kwame Brown, Smush Parker, Radmanovic) because they've gotten under my skin for one reason or another and I no longer respect them. Then there are others, like Pau, whom I will generally overlook their flaws because I like their games so much.

I wish he was a little more athletic, and stronger on the boards and in the post, and hopefully the weight training will take care of that.

But otherwise it's a true treat to watch a big with such a high skill level. I love his hands (no homo), I love his touch (no homo) and I love his passing. I've even gotten used to the idea that he looks like some super-tall homeless guy we plucked off the street with his mangy-ass beard.

I've never thought he was truly soft but rather not particularly strong. Again, hopefully the weight training will change that.
