Fisher is responsible for our defensive problems
I think I have mentioned this before in my previous threads, but I seriously think Fisher is the main reason for our defensive troubles. His mentality to gamble for steals is extremely frustrating. When he makes them he makes them, when he doesnt = to a wide open three, foul, or a drive for the offensive player in the paint. He is losing it manz, and also he cant guard no pg whos age isnt over 40. And, the shots that he takes sometimes (ESPEICALLY THE FREAKING DRIVES IN THE PAINT) a lot of the times it leads to fast break oppurtunities for the other TEAM. We need to find a replacement, and we need to find one NOW!

fisher is 34 years old and on his last legs. he should be a backup playing 20 minutes a game. mitch kupchak is an idiot. he knows we need a starting point guard or small foward but he won't trade odom. could of had billups for odom.

Yes, without jordan farmar right now he is getting exposed even more. Its ridiculous! We cannot win with this guy on our team. You think he can stay up front with Mo Williams and Rajon Rondo? I'm sorry! Aint never gonna happen!!!

Re: Fisher is responsible for our defensive problems
As I've been saying earlier this season; Fisher and Farmar are one of the worst point guard rotations possible in the league. Both defensively, and overall.
We need some help at PG to really get over the top.

Re: Fisher is responsible for our defensive problems
Fisher had no chance of keeping up with Nelson last night. It's the next day, and I'm still frustrated by it. I don't think the Fisher-Farmar tandem is "awful," but LA should definitely explore trade possibilities to upgrade. I wouldn't say Fisher is solely responsible for LA's defensive problems, but he isn't helping when he fails to keep up with the Nelsons, Harris', and Rondos of the league.

Re: Fisher is responsible for our defensive problems
Does anyone have any inside info as to why Fisher is shooting so much and tries so many layups? I don't remember seeing him do that in Utah, and I certainly don't recall he ever play that way last year.

Maybe Phil told Fish to lead by example and what do you know Sasha is shooting too much also now
I'm ok with the upgrade at the PG spot but no way do I trade Odom, he's too valuable (especially when Bynum has mental lapses, seems just about every game).

I agree.
He makes very very bad decisions specially on defense.

Re: Fisher is responsible for our defensive problems
Anyone think Bynum's has some doubt in his knee still.
It seems he doesn't have confidence in yet, thus his rebounding decreases because of his reluctance to go in crowded area and go for the ball
I mean come on: 13 rebs in 5 games.

Re: Fisher is responsible for our defensive problems
^that is a problem in its own.
i seriously doubt that we could have had Billups for Odom. Our guys are getting tired with the lack of depth we've had recently. Odom's still getting back into the groove also.
Now that Portland's on the hook for Darius Miles' deal, maybe we can swap Odom for Outlaw/Blake or something. now thats an idea that can be worked on

Re: Fisher is responsible for our defensive problems
I was watching the Cavs/Bulls game the other day and Kirk Hinrich is EXACTLY what we need. He manages to stay in front of his opponent defensively and doesn't let them drive by. On offense he makes smart decisions and knocks down open shots. He is the perfect PG for this team. The way Bynum's been playing lately I'm reluctant to trade Odom and though I would love it, I really doubt the Bulls would take Vlad and Luke for Kirk.

i think we are being to hard on fisher. he is tired right now,he has been logging alot of minutes in farmar's absence. now with that being said I would love for us to somehow land hinrich. he is a hardnosed guy that i have never seen backdown from anyone.
Only on realgm is 27,000 points, 5 rings, 1 rs mvp and 2 finals mvp considered overrated!

Re: Fisher is responsible for our defensive problems
Ben Gordon is most likely leaving by the end of the year, so the Bulls keeping Hinrich is a real possibility. Getting Hinrich won't happen because Buss is not going to spend recklessly. With Hinrich's contract I doubt they'd deal for him unless they can send Vlad away, and the Bulls aren't interested in taking on long term salary.

Agreed. But the thing is.. Who's better, where we won't take on much salary for next season? That's a big factor. Unless we trade Farmar, Mihm and a 2nd round pick for Steve Blake (which they probably wouldn't accept), who's available?
Trading for Hinrich is a good option... but next season his salary hurts. The inability to re-sign Ariza would hurt.. and we don't have enough depth in the front court to trade LO, I don't think.
Anyone available of interest that you think, tkb?

Re: Fisher is responsible for our defensive problems
Fish age has nothing to do with how he's playing so let's throw that out the window. The problem is Fish like the OP said gambles for steal by not playing his man honestly. The last 2 games Fish is solely responsible for our losses.................no excuses Fish lover's he's cost us games. Fish constantly gets lost in transition and would rather weave around people to find his man instead of gluing himself to him from the start.
I'll tell all of you here what's wrong with to days defense in the NBA, players have lost the art of playing "ball deny" defense. Today's players are too dependent on help defense, this is why Fish roams foolishly away from his man every game. That's what cost us last night, if Fish is deny Nelson any opportunity to get the ball back Howard has to take that shot from 20+ deep with the shot clock running out.
But no Fish totally ignored Nelson who promptly drained the 3 for the go ahead lead the Magic never relinquished. It was all game that Fish played this way, his refusal to honestly play his man is costing us games. And until Phil and Mitch sees that this needs to be corrected to win a title now we'll continue to lose game we should have won. And for those who think Jordan is our answer long term............he ain't. Both are probably the worst defensive guard combo in the NBA.

Re: Fisher is responsible for our defensive problems
When Phil was upset about that "steals" bet between Ariza, Kobe, Farmar, and I believe Fish... I think Kobe was the only one who go the memo to play a little more honest defense and cut down on the gambling. Fish has lost his damn mind, I never felt he was such a poor defender before this season.
I don't like Ariza's constant gambling, but that's what I come to expect from him... plus I know we normally have an alternative in Luke that doesn't gamble all the time. I can't really blame Ariza for gambling though, he's got such a freakish combination of length and speed. But Fish... come on man wake up, you're coming at the game with the complete wrong mentality. Be the fish of old, shoot open 3's and work hard on defense. We don't need you to waste energy driving into the paint putting up ridiculous lay ups at such a bad percentage. I'd much rather have Odom and Bynum taking up all of fish's shot attempts that aren't wide open 3's.
I can't really put all the blame for the last couple losses on Fish though, we lost it as a team. Everyone on our roster had their shortcomings. Dfish's were just magnified at key points in the game.

Re: Fisher is responsible for our defensive problems
JB is right -- It's not just the PG.
Derek is having a tough season, no doubt. But we're struggling mightily (again) with the pick and roll, and that's a two-man job. Bynum and Gasol both lack the lateral quickness to defend it very well, and Radmanovic is a horror show whenever he gets involved in one. I'd even say that Kobe doesn't fight through screens well, either.
Plus, Gasol and especially Bynum are doing a poor job of contesting shots and covering for their teammates. I don't expect them to erase every single mistake we make -- that would be impossible. But I do expect them to protect the basket with some sort of urgency. Neither one is doing that at the moment.
I don't know how many times in the last handful of games I've noticed Andrew nailed to the floor, just a step or two away, as somebody cruises in for an uncontested layup. That can't happen -- at least make the effort, and at worst take a foul. And Gasol is averaging less than a block per game. With his size and wingspan, that is unacceptable.
So as much of an upgrade as we need at the 1, it's not as if our defensive woes would suddenly vanish. We're suffering breakdowns across the court, at numerous different positions in numerous different instances.
