A reliable source also told me that Lakers forward Lamar Odom (expiring this season) is another possibility in an O'Neal deal. The Lakers' Andrew Bynum has not played up to expectations this season (grabbed five rebounds combined in two recent games, isn't controlling the boards like he should) and Pau Gasol is an extremely soft big.
Odom and filler to make the salaries match (Mihm and a minimum contract?) would make some sense for both sides.
L.A. could split its 96 frontcourt minutes between three effective bigs and overpower Western opponents (with Kobe waiting in the wings to decide any game).
Odom would keep the Raptors competitive and give them a multi-talented ball-handler who can create his own shot and shots for others. The team would have the cap space to go after a couple of solid free agents this off-season, when Odom, Anthony Parker, Jorge Garbojosa and Joey Graham come off the cap.

Re: Odom for O'Neal rumour
Lol. The Triplet Towers. If we did this, then that would probably mean Bynum off the bench with the second unit which is exactly what I want. O'Neal is a great defender and rebounder, what we need, but I'm not sure of his health issues.

Re: Odom for O'Neal rumour
As much as I like JO, I think I'm going to frown upon this deal. Our problems are at the PG. So unless we can make a three team trade with us getting back a solid PG and JO in return, than I wouldn't do it.

Re: Odom for O'Neal rumour
I agree with Tyler and Kobay, we need sufficient play at the 1 and 3 spots. I like JO but this clogs the middle as far as minutes go. But I'm all for Bynum going to the bench cause he's just not holding his weight on the boards. For all you Bynum lovers here check my post from the Spurs game and Magic game, we won't win consistently or easy until he starts to bust his butt on the boards.
No way in hell should he be getting 3,4 or 5 boards a game, to prove my point he only got 1 defensive board last night. Sorry fellas but we ain't winning NOTHING until this is solved. You can keep fooling yourself and say we are, but Pat Riley said a quote that he should make people pay to use, "No rebounds, no rings".And I be damn if he wasn't lying.

Re: Odom for O'Neal rumour
no thanx! i would rather have odom. we can already play outstanding defense,we just need to do it consistently. the only hole i see for us is point guard. we need someone to give derek some rest, because i don't see phil sending derek to the bench in favor of another player.
Only on realgm is 27,000 points, 5 rings, 1 rs mvp and 2 finals mvp considered overrated!

Re: Odom for O'Neal rumour
Helllllllllllllll Noooooooooooo.
Why would we get him, so he can sit on the bench his entire time, when we already have a 14 million dollar baby we need to hold his hand and walk him up the court.
Its funny watching Bynum play, he reminds me of this kid in grade school he was bigger and taller than all of us, but DUM as an Ox, everytime we had to run to the bus stop, one of us hand to grab his hand and tell him run Chucky RUN, and then he would run for a few seconds and then he would stop, and then we had to stop again and tell him to run so we all didnt miss the bus..............
Well to me Bynum is Chucky....... Chucky cant even run up and down the court.
Now we need Oneal????
Oneal cant even stand on his knees, if anyteam gets Oneal they need a 50% discount on his contract and an additional 25% off the already reduced price........... Hell no.
I would rather trade Chucky away for a bag of chips than taking on powder knees and his contract.

Re: Odom for O'Neal rumour
Well.. after messing around for an hour, and exploring the league for cheap PG options.. I finally came up with this. I wouldn't do the deal though, because of salary cap problems for us next season. Would Buss pay for a winner though, and do we break chemistry of what we have right now? Personally, no.
Three team trade between Toronto, Portland, and the LA Lakers.
Los Angeles Lakers
Outgoing: Lamar Odom, Sasha Vujacic, Jordan Farmar, Chris Mihm, Sun Yue
Incoming: Jermaine O'Neal, Steve Blake
PG: Derek Fisher/ Steve Blake/
SG: Kobe Bryant/ Trevor Ariza/
SF: Vladimir Radmanovic/ Luke Walton/
PF: Pau Gasol/ Josh Powell/
C: Jermaine O'Neal/ Andrew Bynum/ DJ Mbenga
9 man rotation of..
Fisher
Kobe
Radmanovic
Gasol
O'Neal
Bynum
Ariza
Blake
(Luke/Powell depending on the team)
Reason: It obviously helps our defensive tremendously. When JO is healthy, he's been great at blocking shots and he's helped Bosh a lot out on the boards. Steve Blake is a good perimeter defender that could come off the bench and play either PG or SG. Our bench is still strong with Ariza, Blake, Andrew and Powell.
Reason We Would Not: Salary cap reasons. Next season we would have..
Kobe Bryant: $23,034,375
Jermaine O'Neal: $22,995,000
Pau Gasol: $16,451,250
Andrew Bynum: $12,526,998
Vladimir Radmanovic: $6,466,600
Luke Walton: $4,840,000
Derek Fisher: $5,048,000
Steve Blake: $4,930,000
Josh Powell: Around $1,000,000 - He has a team option for a 2nd year
9 guys at around 97 million. BEFORE re-signing Ariza. Does Buss think this team would be worth it?
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Toronto Raptors
Outgoing: Jermaine O'Neal, Joey Graham
Incoming: Ike Diogu, Chris Mihm, Lamar Odom, Sun Yue
PG: Jose Calderon/ Will Solomon/ Roko Ukic
SG: Anthony Parker/ Jason Kapono/ Sun Yue
SF: Lamar Odom/ Jamario Moon/
PF: Chris Bosh/ Ike Diogu/ Kris Humphries
C: Andrea Bargnani/ Chris Mihm/ Jake Voskhul/ (Nathan Jawai)
Reason: They have a huge expiring in Odom, and until then, a player who "can" play the wing position. It's the position Lamar feels he's the most comfortable in.. just not with the Lakers. They also get more front court depth with Diogu and Mihm.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Portland Trailblazers
Outgoing: Steve Blake, Ike Diogu
Incoming: Joey Graham, Sasha Vujacic, Jordan Farmar
PG: Jerryd Bayless/ Jordan Farmar/ Sergio Rodriguez/
SG: Brandon Roy/ Sasha Vujacic/ Martell Webster
SF: Nicholas Batum/ Travis Outlaw/ Joey Graham/
PF: LaMarcus Aldridge/ Channing Frye/ Shavlik Randolph
C: Greg Oden/ Joel Przybilla/ Raef LaFrentz/
Reason: With Steve Blake gone, it allows their young PG (Bayless) to step in and start. Martell Webster has given them absolutely nothing this year, so Sasha can fill his role. Farmar can step in and compete with Bayless as a starter or impact player off the bench.

We need to put this to bed once and for all. No more talk of us getting JO. Guy is too injury prone.

Dude, you gotta clarify the thread title. I clicked on it thinking you meant Shaquille O'neal.
Also, no JO. I don't think he'll ever again be the player he once was.

Re: Odom for J O'Neal rumour
This 2 team trade wouldn't make any sense. We're trading Odom because he can't play the 3 for a brokedown Jermaine O'Neal who can't play the 3 and will be making $23 million next season. But a 3 team trade that would make sense is this:
To Lakers: Shawn Marion + filler
To Raptors: Lamar Odom + filler
To Heat: Jermaine O'Neal + filler
Every team gets the player they want.

Portland easily passes on this. Blake is our best 3 point shooter and even if Bayless can consistently play like he did vs NJ, the last thing PDX needs is more guards right now. We already have Brandon Roy, Jerryd Bayless, Rudy Fernandez, Steve Blake, and Sergio Rodriguez so there's little need to create even more of a logjam at the guard positions. At this point, we need to consolidate talent more than anything, and this deal only makes our guard situation worse.

Re: Odom for J O'Neal rumour
I would probably do it... I dont think Buss would though... I know we need a PG/SF but who could we possibly get? Hinrich and Marion come to mind but do Chicago/Miami even want Lamar? I dont think they do.... there arent many realistic possibilities at either option, and if we got an SF we would have to dump one of Luke/Radman which is nearly impossible...
I think our SF position is fine once Luke gets back... We are a lot better with him starting than Radman...
Back to the trade.. JO is better than LO and Mihm doesnt play... And we are already over the cap... so yeah, I'd do it

Re: Odom for J O'Neal rumour
How about Raptors' Anthony Parker? He could shoot, and he could defend pretty well. We could get in for pretty cheap price. In the triangle, we don't need a pure PG anyways. Kirk Hinrich is a nice option too, but his contract sucks. It all depends if Buss is willing to spend the cash though. Too bad we passed on Billups, he'd fit PERFECTLY in our offense AND improve our perimeter D tremendously.
