Phil and his plans

Post#1 » by hermes » Sat Jan 24, 2009 4:14 am

wiretap
In an interview that will air on Sunday during ABC's coverage of the Lakers and Spurs, Phil Jackson told Magic Johnson that he plans to coach the club through the 2009-10 season and then retire.

"One more year after this one with the Lakers," Jackson said. "Dr. Buss has insinuated that he would like me to coach longer, but I said, 'Let's just do one year at a time right now.' So that's what we're doing."

Jackson's contract will be up through the 2009-10 season.

thoughts?

Not sure..............

I think he may want to see how he feels physically, before he goes and commits to any length of time.

He might even want to see what the team looks like and what direction they are going in.

I do think that if they win a championship this year or even next............then he definitely will retire when contract is up.

Interesting.

I respect Phil and his decision. I hope he racks up a couple more rings before he goes... hey what a coincidence.

Byron Scott's contract is up around the same time.

Anyway, nothing worry about now.

my thoughts exactly about winning another championship before retiring. If he wins another ring (and passes auerbach) before 09/10 is up then it's pretty much guaranteed no matter what his health is IMHO.

I think it is close to the time for Phil to shut it down. He will be 64 in September and I would love to get Byron Scott to coach the new Lakers' going forward. I guess I got my answer in the other post as Scott's contract will be up at the same time.

Phil might just become an assistant GM or a consultant to the team. Either way he has done a great job and will continue to do one. I guess the other question would be if Scott or anybody else takes over is the triangle offically dead.

I agree. There's not a single doubt in my mind, if he wins his 10th ring he's walking away...........for good.

Interesting tidbit about Scott's contract. I think Byron's even gone on record calling L.A. his dream job.

As for Phil, it wouldn't surprise me at all to see him hang it up that soon. He's been doing this for a long time, and had a lot of success, and made a **** load of money. I can imagine that the motivation is starting to wane just a bit.

I really don't see Byron Scott coaching Kobe. I have a feeling that its going to be Coach K after Phil. Byron Scott is a great coach and I can't see him leaving the Hornets and Chris Paul anytime soon and I also see the relationship and chemistry that Kobe developed with Coach K might pull him to the NBA.

Please don't bring in Coach K. College coaches do not work at the pro level. Yeah I know he coached the olympic team but that is completely different.

It's definitely too early but this is realgm so what the hell, right?
I would definitely take a long look at Byron Scott and also interview some guys from the current coaching staff like Brian Shaw, Kurt Rambis, and Frank Hamblen.

Well.. you need a superstar coach to manage egos of superstar players and we have quite a few of them on our team. This aspect of Phil's coaching is very often underrated. I'm interested in knowing how long Pops is on contract in San Antonio.

Both Kobe and Byron have gone on record about their admiration for eachother. Byron was the one guy who took Kobe under his wing when he first joined the lakers. There is alot of love there.

Phil you was thinking the same thing I was, I want Byron to have this job when PJ does go. And I hope he hires Coop as his lead assistant.

College coaches don't work in the NBA j-far.............they just can't get use to the fact they are around grown men. Don't believe me ? People thought these guys would do great until they bombed badly.

Mike Montgomery
Mike Calipari
Lon Krueger
Lenard Hamilton
Tim Floyd

The list goes on, but you get my drift here ?

He has to leave sometime, and he is getting up there in age... I'm sure he doesnt want to do this forever... When that time comes, I wouldnt mind Byron Scott or Coach K... Kobe wanted Coach K when Phil left the first time, but he wasnt ready to leave Duke...

And not all college coaches are bad in the NBA, it completely depends on the circumstance... Popavich, Chuck Daly and Bill Fitch all coached in college and went on to lead NBA teams to championships

Didn't we go through this whole coach K thing a few years back? Not gonna happen!!

Like I said earlier, I think Phil wants one more title and hopefully that is in the next two years (hopefully it's a back to back --- BABY)....If he wins before contract is up....he is done, he has nothing left to prove or accomplish. If they do not win one before his contract is up...........it wouldn't suprise me if he would do a year to year thing.

But when he walks away, don't be suprised if Kurt Rambis takes the lead......It would be Rambis and the same staff...........Rambis and Shaw are being tutored by Phil, think Phil moves into the office with his Gal Pal - Jeanie!

Popovich has stated on numerous occasions that he's planning on retiring as soon as Duncan hangs it up, which will probably be in four or five years.

And Phil's dead-on about Scott -- he was one of the few people that Kobe allowed to mentor him during his younger years in L.A.

Plus, don't forget that Byron not only played for the Lakers but he grew up in L.A. I can't imagine he wouldn't jump at the opportunity to coach here if it was presented to him, unless the Hornets were just too good to leave.

I'd like to see coach D'Antoni turn this young core into a run-n-gun offense. That, my friend, is SHOWTIME.
